The Giants Play Indiana Jones Next Thursday

Indiana Jones: Batting .380 on the year with 10 homers

We here at Giants Cove have been conspicuously absent for a little less than a week (blame it on the sunny weather). Frolicking in the 90 degree sun limit’s one’s ability to do anything along the lines of write, read, work, and any number of other activities I’ve neglected to do in the last week. With the weather settling on a cool 65, I’m sunburnt and ready to post about all the Giants-related news I’ve missed while baking in the sun.

After losing three of four to Lance Berkman and an assortment of 24 other players, the Giants dropped two straight to the White Sox, in two heartbreaking games in which the Giants managed to total just one run. Barry Zito dropped to 0-8, the offense sputtered, and our owner announced his attentions to jump ship at the conclusion of the 2008 season. Today, Matt Cain is currently in the process of getting shelled by the ChiSox to the number of three home runs after not surrendering a hit for 4 1/3 innings.

As hard as this is to watch, none of it is very surprising. We knew from the start of the year that the offense would struggle, and that the pitching would have to be utterly perfect for us to win games. The pitching has been good, but when giving up more than 2 runs will get you the loss, it’s hard to be much better unless you’re Tim “Jesus Christ” Lincecum. In addition to this, it doesn’t help that the warm weather in San Francisco has made AT&T Park play small, with the ball carrying out to center and left-center on a daily basis.

After today, the Giants leave for a nine game roadtrip that goes through Colorado, Florida, and Arizona. It’s difficult to tell how the Giants will fare, but my best guess is that we take two of three from the Rockies, and lose two of three to the Marlins and D-Backs. We can only hope that a trip to Coors Field will wake up the Giants’ dormant bats, as studies show that not scoring runs is the #1 contributor to a losing record. In the meantime, I’m going back outside (this time armed with a tube of sunscreen) as weather.com tells me that it’s now 70 degrees. If anyone needs me, I’ll be swimming in Lake Washington.
