The Choice…

Every fan must eventually choose  how he reconciles the immediacy of his fandom (IE the joy of beating the hated dodgers) with the the long term interest of his team (IE the Celts tanking the entire 2007 trying to acquire Greg Oden).     I made my choice long ago.     I am simply unable to cheer for the Giants to lose games, even when the immediate defeat may benefit the team eventually.   So the past 5 games of offensive ineptitude, which as Grant  noted bare an awful similarity to many a dire preseason predictions,  have been painful for me as fan.    However, undeniably, these same 5 games have benefited the Giants franchise.   By eliminating the urge to say “aw hell… we’re only 4 games back from a mediocre 1st place team.   Let’s trade Matt Cain and Jon Sanchez for Ritchie Sexson!!1!”,  the losing streak has  served to reinforce the need to build for 2009 rather than 2008.

Let’s be honest.  Anyone who genuinely believed the Giants would stand a chance against the Cubbies or the Rays has access to some phenomenal mind-altering substances.   Even when the playoffs were not entirely out of the question, the Giants essentially weren’t competing for the world series.    Losing will never be fun for me as a fan, and I will NEVER cheer for the Giants to lose.   But…if lose we must, I would rather it have positive ramifications.

Am I the only one actually enjoying this season?

We may be losing but I’m having a good time watching Bowker, Burris, Lewis, Lincecum, Cain, ect, ect develop into major league players. When this season started I was not looking forward to watching Giants baseball at all but that has all changed.

The fact that the GIANTS are finally looking into and signing international talent has got me pumped. As i stated before on this site, we can thank Mr. John Barr and for that matter, Felipe Alou for helping out Brian Sabean bring in the talent needed to keep up with other talented rosters. Here’s a piece from Cris Taft on the Giants web about the signing of another international player bagged by the two-some force of Alou and Barr. -
” The Giants signed 16-year-old outfielder Rafael Rodriguez, a highly regarded prospect from the Dominican Republic, to a $2.55 million bonus, the largest ever given in franchise history to an amateur player”.- “Felipe Alou, the former Giants manager who is now a special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean, was among several club officials to evaluate Rodriguez and came away duly impressed.

“I haven’t seen him swing and miss yet,” said Alou, who watched Rodriguez take batting practice and play a couple of games against older competition.

Alou believes that Rodriguez, who plays mostly right field, will gain bulk on his 6-foot-5, 198-pound frame.

“He’s obviously going to get a lot bigger and stronger than he is right now,” Alou said. Rodriguez, a right-handed batter, has been described as a five-tool player, although Alou called his speed “average or better.”

Alou also liked Rodriguez’s demeanor: “He’s a very confident young person.”

Rodriguez’s signing further reflects the Giants’ increased presence in the international market, which stems largely from the arrival of John Barr as scouting director last offseason. Earlier this month, the Giants signed Dominican right-hander Luis Mateo, another 16-year-old.

Barr said that Rodriguez, who was signed to a 2009 contract and won’t start playing professionally until then, will continue to practice in the Dominican Republic before undergoing a physical examination in San Francisco or at the Giants’ training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. Barr expects Rodriguez to participate with other Giants prospects in the Arizona instructional league beginning in September. He’ll also perform in a Dominican instructional league.
