Indians Add Stats Analyst to Front Office
It’s only appropriate on the heels of James’ insistence to only consider the statistics that matter that the Indians hire a guy who can, hopefully, tell them a lot about meaningful statistics.
Keith Woolner, long-time Baseball Prospectus contributor, announced he’ll be joining (free article) the Indians’ front office as Manager of Baseball Research and Analysis. As the title on BP puts it, “A good front office just got better.”
The Indians already have Chris Antonetti who, aside from handling contract negotiations, holds somewhat of a reputation as the Tribe’s in-house sabermetrician. He’ll have company–and, as Woolner brings the BP approach to Cleveland.
If you’re not a fan of Baseball Prospectus, you should be. I’ll put it this way–I’ve been an ESPN Insider for only a few months, but a BP subscriber for three years. If you want to stretch your mind and your perspective on baseball, BP is a great place to start.
This doesn’t mean Cleveland will venture into a realm of player analysis never before possible, but it does add another dimension of expertise to front office already considered progressive .

Well here’s the first stat this guy should be telling you for the next 4 games against my Orioles…
Put lefthander’s on the mound.
Period.
The Orioles are putrid against lefties. I’m pretty sure we’ve managed to get a negative batting average against southpaws this year. So find a lefthanded, any lefthanded, and put him on the mound. You’ll walk to a 4 game sweep.

Paul Byrd throws about as hard as the conventional left hander.
Good enough?

Great news for the Tribe. Woolner is one of my favorite BP guys.
I hate Dayn Perry, just for the record.
