Former Mariner Catcher John Marzano Dies

MLB.Com reports that catcher John Marzano, who spent three years with the Mariners in the late 1990’s, has died at his home in Philadelphia of injuries in a fall down stairs caused by a suspected heart attack. He was only 45, and is survived by his wife, Terri, daughters Dominique and Danielle, and two grandchildren. Marzano had most recently been the co-host of MLB.com’s “Leading Off” segment.

Marzano was the first-round draft pick of the Red Sox out of Temple University, and also played for the Sox and the Rangers, as well as the 1984 Olympic Team. After closing out his major league career with the M’s, he broadcast Phillies games for WIP radio and Comcast SportsNet before joining MLB.com.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Marzano family and his friends and colleagues at MLB.com.

He will be missed more as a father than anything that he did in baseball. Baseball seems far less important today than it did yesterday.

Being a loyal Philadelphia sports fan, I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Johnny Marz.
While we did not know him personally, we felt like we did - he was funny, told great stories, had great insight
and was just like the guy next door. Sports radio and
TV will miss him. Phillies fans will miss him. Our
city will miss a great ambassador. My condolences to his family.

Great baseball guy and he seemed like a fun guy to be around based on hearing him on WIP and seeing him on Comcast. I will miss his commentary and his spirit. My families prayers go out to the Marzano family. God Bless Johnny Marz.
