Hanley backs Tucker, Fish dismantle Reds

Ryan Tucker impressed in his major league debut on Sunday afternoon and with the help of two Hanley Ramirez homers, picked up his first major league win.

The 21-year-old didn’t necessarily roll through his five innings of work. His habit of giving up a lot of walks followed him from AA to the majors but fortunately, so did his composure. In the 2nd, Tucker put two guys on with only one out but limited the damage to just a single run. He wiggled out of the same situation again in the 5th without giving up a run. Featuring mid-high 90s fastball with nice tailing action, Tucker struck out 6 Reds. He still needs to develop his secondary pitches a bit more but he’s got good make up and the foundation is there. With no competition other than Burke Badenhop around for the fifth spot in the rotation, Tucker will probably stick around and get an extended look.

The Marlins have relied heavily on the long ball this year but against Aaron Harang, they showed they have the ability to construct runs early in the ballgame. After Mike Rabelo reached on a drop third strike to open the 3rd, the Fish strung together three straight singles to plate him. The Fish added on in similar fashion in the next frame. Dan Uggla smacked a lead off double and came across to score 180 feet worth of sac flies. From there, a shaken up Harang went on to allow runs in all of his last three innings. All of them were batted in by Ramirez and Uggla. In the Marlins’ last five games, Danley has beat out 15 hits, homer 5 times and plated 11 runs.

The Fish will try to take three out of four from Cincinnati later tonight. Edinson Volquez and Mark Hendrickson will face off for the second time in less than a month. Volquez outdueled Hendrickson on May 13, working 7 shutout frames. Since then, Volquez has allowed a grand total of eight runs in 26.2 innings.
