Marlins can’t solve Jimenez, fall to Rockies
After plating seven in the first three innings and ultimately plating eleven on Thursday night, the Marlins got shut out through 6 and ultimately only scored twice as they fell to the Rockies, 5-2 in the second game of a four game set.
The big difference last night? Ubaldo Jimenez was sitting on the bench. After a rough start to the season Jimenez broke out in July, going 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA in six starts. The righty got through his first 4 August innings without allowing a hit. He wound up going 7, allowing just two singles and coming within one of his seasonal high strikeout total of 11. It was his seventh straight quality start.
Chris Volstad had his streak of three straight quality starts to open his career snapped. The 21-year-old lived on the edge in his first 4 innings, putting five men in scoring position but only allowing one run. He finally fell off of it in the 5th, loading the bases and giving up 3 runs on a Chris Iannetta two RBI single and an Omar Quintanilla RBI single. In his last three games against Florida, Iannetta has four hits, two homers and eight RBIs. Volstad’s defense wasn’t necessarily cooperative though, creating two errors with two outs and despite allowing a seasonal high four runs, the youngster also tied a seasonal high in strikeouts with six. He did it for the first time in his last start against the Cubs. For a kid still learning the ins and outs of the game, Volstad is doing everything right.
Rubber match tonight. Victor De Los Santos vs Ricky Nolasco.
