Oleanders and Morning Glories

Hardly working? No, the other one.

Nats win and are now primed to take, like I said, 3 of 4 from Pittsburgh and get back to the 7X-win pace they are destined for.

I know what you’re thinking though - and I’m taking a moment to tell you to stop thinking it/

“If the Nats offense…”

no stop it….

“only gets a little better and the pitching…”

are you not listening to me?

“stays the same.  This team could…”

I should just shut up, right?

“make a run at….what are you saying?”

Oh good.  You listened.    Anyway the Nats offense can get a little better.  It’s not blowing anyone out of the water, it’s not blowing them onto a wave, it’s not blowing them anywhere.  But the pitching stay the same?  You do realize the staff ERA during this little 6-2 jag is 3.12 right?  That’s almost a run better than the best ERA in all the National League last year.  It’s going to get worse, sometime rather soon.  If the offense picks up then great.  The team may hold it’s ground.  But don’t look at what we’ve seen on the mound and think the Nats are reaching their potential.  They are overshooting it.   A lot.

“You’re no fun, are you”

No, I’m not.

These seasons would be pretty barren if I didn’t run playoff fantasies through my head till at least the end of July.

You know, winning 40 of our last 41, or some such.

Of course, it will all fall apart eventually, because if Redding and Perez keep pitching above average, dont we have to trade them?

Perez maybe, I would think Redding is part of the “future” of this team. While not incredibly young, he’s certainly young enough to be a player if this teams plans to compete in ‘09/’10

you would think so, but have they ever traded a legitimite starter?

One reason to keep them - neither of these guys are old so maybe if you think the offense will come around before enough young starters develop you might want to hold onto them for a year or two

Another reason - Bowden will ask an arm and a leg for them

Maybe I’m wrong, but is he not on a one year contract?

Can Perez and Redding become type As? I thought it was based on prior service as well as your final year. If thats true, the Nats will be getting little to nothing if they walk, right?

It’s two year rankings and neither of them will be A’s, given Reddings lack of IP and Odalis’s performance last year. B might be possible (I’m not sure of the numbers but I think an awesome year would do it).

Would they let them walk for a B rather than deal - I bet the Nats would. Their trade approach seems to be “Give me a major league ready prospect or I’ll draft my own”. They’d probably try to keep one or both with as low a deal as the market would accept.

Would they let them walk for nothing…less sure about that. They haven’t run into this situation a lot, veteran pitcher doing well enough to deal. Ramon Ortiz and Livan were both stinking when their deals were running out. Loaiza was doing well - but that’s differen’t management AND he was going to be Type A.
