Has the price gone up for Zimmerman?

Ryan Braun got 8 yrs and 45 million from the Brew Crew today and that’s not good news for the Nats’ management.  They were hoping to make rookie Troy Tulowitzki’s contract apply to 3rd year Ryan Zimmerman.   He balked at that.  Now his side has another rookie contract to point to - one that’s much more favorable to Zimm.

For those of you that think “Oh, but he stinks.  Look at his numbers now”

May 15th 2006:  .266 / .338 / .441
Final Stats 2006:  .287 / .351 / .471

May 15th 2007:  .239 / .289 / .340
Final Stats 2007:  .266 / .330 / .458

May 15th 2008:  .240 / .274 / .413
(just like last year)

Assuming the same sort of trend we could see Zimm end up with about a .270 / .320 / .480 line.   What would you pay for a .270 hitting 3rd baseman with 30 hrs? One who fields excellently?  One who is 23 yrs old?

It’s a fine line the Nationals are walking, Harper. Personally, I think it’s really up to Ryan what he wants to do at this point.

I think Braun, Kazmir and especially Longoria signed deals that locked financial security for them; however, down the road, much like with Grady Sizemore (to an extent), the deals they signed this year may be below market value in the next 4-5 years.

Now, again, I always say there’s plenty of time for Zimmerman to sign a deal and for Nats’ fans all to be happy.

The inherent risk of course is does he get better and will his demands become so astronomical that he bolts at the start of the next decade?

Maybe, but we still have plenty of time and a lot can happen in 3 plus years.
