Mark Lerner - baseball savant

Ok so it’s pretty clear that at least Mark Lerner doesn’t understand baseball.  Which is perfectly ok for a real estate magnate, but it might just be a little problem for a guy who, you know, owns a baseball team. For instance:

Nobody wants - you don’t want to be in the situation where you wake up one morning and Johan Santana has won eight games all season and you owe him $150 million

Johan Santana his 5th in the NL in ERA (2.84), 10th in WHIP (1.19), 7th in strikeouts (114).  So far he has yet to give up more than 4 ERs in a single game and has only done that 3 times.   He’s only twice given the Mets less than 6 full innings.  At 29 years old, he’s definately a Top 10 starter in the NL, arguably a Top 5, and guess what?  Historically he’s a 2nd half pitcher. But because of a bit of bad luck and a bit of middling run support, he doesn’t have 10 wins yet so HE SUCKS AND HIS CONTRACT IS AN ALBATROSS ANCHORING THE METS AND KEEPING THEM FROM SUCCESS.Flawless logic, truly flawless.  The only thing I can think of is that he doesn’t know there is a 2nd half of the season.  ”What, Santana only has won 8 games? That’s awful! He was supposed to win 20!”

But somehow, the quote provides the perfect way to mark the unofficial half-way point of the season. The organization continues to bathe themselves in glory…

Sorry, I guess that should’ve read “itself”, not “themselves”. Oh well.

Hmmm…. I wonder who might have given him the idea that it doesn’t do anything for us if pitchers pitch well but don’t notch wins?

But no you’re right this is an idiotic thing to say.

I think the money quote is this:

“You see a lot of guys for $150 million, but we’re going to stick with what we’re doing. We’re going to take a lot of heat from you and everybody else, but I think you’re starting to see it.”"

Yep! We’re starting to see it! 81 to 93 to 91 to over 100 losses! We’re improving (the wrong number)!!1

For me, they can spin 100 losses into a good year as long as they try to make sense. Calling out Johan Santana’s deal as a possible bad contract because he only has 8 wins in the 1st half of this year… that’s just nonsense.

Wasn’t one of the main reason the Lerners got the team was the presence of Stan Kasten?

Wasn’t the conventional wisdom that Kasten would be the mouthpiece for the organization given his background?

Did Mark Lerner not just reinforce why it should always be Stan Kasten commenting on the operation of the team?

Maybe he thinks Lannan is a rubbish pitcher because he hasn’t won that many? Is that right Stan? By his logic incidentally Tim Redding is exactly one win from being every bit the pitcher Johan Santana is. No wonder the family is so excited by this season. We have a potential CY Young winner anchoring our staff. Not that I have anything against Tim Redding but if I had to choose…

He is the owner not the GM. As long as he doesnt override Kasten and his checks dont bounce, he is a damn brilliant baseball man IMO.
