PERLOZZO MUST GO!!!!

PERLOZZO FIRED ON JUNE 18th, 2007. READ ABOUT IT HERE!

In what has to be the single dumbest managerial move since leaving Pedro Martinez in the game in the 2003 ALCS, Sam Perlozzo took Jeremy Guthrie out of a game where he could do no wrong on Sunday, only to replace him with a tired bullpen that couldn’t buy an out.

The result? A predictable 6-5 loss instead of the 5-0 win that the game should have been.

There can be no more excuses for keeping this loser as a part of the team. Sam Perlozzo isn’t just holding the Orioles back. He’s a big huge concrete barrier in their path toward improving. He clearly has no idea what he’s doing. He’s obviously too incompetent to do the job. he needs to go. NOW!

Perlozzo isn’t the worst manager in Orioles history. That honor still belongs to Lee Mazilli by a country mile. But Perlozzo is no. 2 on the all time worst list.

Baseball managers are often reffered to as the Skipper. Well Sam Perlozzo is more like Gilligan, always screwing up the professor’s well laid plans to get off the island.

Jeremy Guthrie pitched an absolute gem on Sunday at Fenway Park. He owned the heavy hitting Boston Red Sox to the tune of 0 runs and only 3 hits in 8.1 innings with only 91 pitches thrown.

Victory wasn’t just within sight. It was being gift wrapped and loaded onto the Orioles’ bus by Manny Ramirez himself, who’s already been pulled from the game in what could only be considered concession by Boston skipper Terry Francona.

But nope. Can’t cruise to an easy win for 2 measly outs! Not the Orioles!

Not with Sam “What’s a Bullpen” Perlozzo at the helm of the ship!

The Red Sox had conceded the game. They knew that Guthrie had their number and sure didn’t look to be trying very hard to come back from a 5 run deficit with only 2 outs to go.

I don’t care if Guthrie’s arm was about to fall off. I don’t care if he said he was tired. I don’t care if the president of the universe was calling him on the dugout phone to get information that only Guthrie knew about how to save the galaxy from alien invaders of another dimension…

YOU DON’T PULL THE STARTER IN THAT SITUATION!!!!

E V E R ! ! !

You especially don’t pull him when your only option for replacement is a worn out bullpen that’s looked really bad against Boston all year.

Well, not unless you’re Sam Perlozzo of course! If you’re Sam Perlozzo you routinely pull the hurler that’s looking great and leave in the ones that couldn’t find the plate at a dish factory!

Baez replaced Guthrie and immediately gave up a run. On his next hitter he gave up another hit. His day would end with 2 ER’s charged to him without recording a single out.

Chris Ray, who’s already proven that he’s not very good with inherited runners, and who’s already given up two walk off grand slams this season, one of which was to these same Red Sox, was brought in to meltdown in proportions that made Chernobyl look like a day at the park!

Recording only 1 out, Ray gave up 2 hits, served 3 walks, and dropped the ball on the play at first that would have still allowed the O’s to escape with a win!

It obviously wasn’t his day! Everyone could see it. Everyone except Sam Perlozzo.

And let’s not be trying to blame this on Chris Ray. Yes, he sucked harder than a Hoover during a power surge. But he’s also been over worked lately and shouldn’t have been in the game in the first place. And when it became obvious to everyone that he didn’t have his stuff today in any aspect of the game, he should have been pulled.

And that’s not even bringing up again that Guthrie shouldn’t have been pulled in the first place! Letting along Baez being pulled for Ray!

As for the dropped ball at 1st that allowed Veritek and Hinske to score and win the game, we were only still playing at that point because of a bad call at the plate.

Kevin Youkilis scored on the play at the plate a batter earlier. I don’t care what the home plate umpire called it. He got to the plate before the throw. He should have been the tying run. He was called out, but he beat the throw.

The error at first would have then come with only 1 out in a tie game and it would have been over anyway even if the runner was safe.
So as bad as Ray was, it wasn’t his fielding that lost this game. It was the fact that he was in the game in the first place!

The Orioles were 2 outs away from taking 2 of 3 on the road from the best team in the American League.

But Sam Perlozzo panicked when Ramon Hernandez made a 9th inning fielding error and decided that replacing the pitcher was the best was to combat the fielding error by the catcher!

And does he take any responsibility for the loss at all? None! In the post game interview Perlozzo stood by his decisions and acted as if they were the obvious calls to make because Guthrie was “a little tired”!

“A little tired”!?! He mabye needed 5 or 6 more pitches to end this game. I don’t care if he was “a little tired”!

I don’t care if Guthrie was begging to be taken out of the game. He was doing really well and should have stayed. Perlozzo indicated after the game that Guthie has indicated that he was tiring and wanted to come out.

Well you know what, Sam? If you’re just going to let the players make the decisions, we really don’t need you!

Instead of coddling a guy who’s “a little tired” how about telling him to suck it the hell up and just win the damn game!? That’s what a leader does. A wimp pulls him out of the game.

It’s inexcusable. It’s the sign of a manager that has no business being in the major leagues. It’s time to fire Sam Perlozzo. I can find no reason to keep him on the payroll for another day.

I know that Leo Mazzone would probably follow Sam out the door, but you know what? I’m okay with that. The Orioles lead the universe in walks right now, and lost this game and most of their other lost games largely due to the fact that the pitchers can’t throw strikes.
I don’t care what Leo Mazzone did in Atlanta. He’s not getting the job done here despite how much we all thought he would. I can’t say I’d be losing sleep if he left.

While I’m firing coaches, let’s get rid of all the others too. These guys have been around for years, and the Orioles have sucked for years. Replacing the people in charge sure seems like a good place to start. We’re not seeing improvement in any of the areas that the coaches are supposed to be able to help with. The pitching is erratic. The hitting has been anything but fundamental. Get rid of this random collection of coaches and bring in one manager who can find his own staff.
Even the Orioles post game radio show that’s nothing short of a highly regulated propaganda of the Orioles, exploded with criticism over this one. Tom Davis, the ultimate homer, was livid over Perlozzo’s decision making!

When the radio crew that’s been hired specifically to talk up the team no matter how bad things are starts bashing the manager, it’s a clear indication that he’s not any good and needs to go.

The Orioles were 2 outs away from being .500, taking 2 of 3 from the Red Sox, being 6 games out of 1st, winning the first series against the Red Sox since 2003, and headed to last place and injury riddled Toronto with a rested bullpen.

Instead, they end the game 2 games under .500, losing their 10th series in a row to Boston, being 8 games off the pace, and head to Canada with an even more worn out bullpen .

And why is the bullpen so worn out? Because Perlozzo has burned them out with mis management all season!

This nonsense can’t be allowed to continue. Even I, loyal to the bone with orange blood coursing through my veins, am starting to question if I care enough to watch this crap on a daily basis.

By the way, I ranted a few days ago about how baseball shouldn’t use ’situation specific relievers’, notable closers, only in save situations. Well that’s a two way street. When the ‘closer’ isn’t the best choice, he shouldn’t be gone to just because he’s the closer.

Inheriting runners isn’t a set up that Ray deals with well. Especially against the Red Sox. So don’t put him into that situation!

But let’s end this on a positive note. Jeremy Guthrie tossed an absolute gem. It was the best start by any O’s hurler this season. It was one of the best of the last 10 years. In one of the most efficient outings I’ve seen in a long time, Guthrie recording 25 outs with only 91 pitches. It was a beauty!

This is by a guy who wasn’t supposed to be starting this year. Guthrie’s got a 3.34 ERA on the season and is the only pitcher on the team that doesn’t walk batters like it’s going out of style.

Perhaps we’ve stumbled onto a guy who can be a solid contributor to the team in the future. (As long as we get rid of the manager who likes to waste his efforts.)

When you’re done reading my thoughts on the Orioles, don’t forget to listen to Anthony and James for their thoughts as well!

Beltway Baseball’s 3rd episode was released today. Don’t miss it!

I going to go vomit and/or punch a hole in the wall now.

I hate this team. I’m divorcing them all with the exception of Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Roberts (for the heads up play in the 9th).

Thank God your back on Mike. And you are 100% correct. I was screaming at the TV. WHY PULL GUTHRIE!!!!! This game reminds me of when Ryan gave up the slam to Ortiz and the downward spiral from that in 2005. Guthrie had only thrown 91 pitches. 91!!!!!!!!! This is coaching 101! A no brainer. I immediatly screamed as he was walking out to the mound DON”T PULL HIM, DON”T PULL HIM!

And if Mazzone goes, SO WHAT?! If the staff through strikes this team would be 5 games over .500. Perlazzo is holding this team back and Mazzone has been nothing but a dissapointment.

This was as heart wrenching a loss as I can remember and it all falls on the coach! PERIOD! To lead of the ninth none of those pitchers were in the mindset of coming in the game. He gets Lugo to ground out then I’m sure the ‘pen really got relaxed. A popup to Ramon that he drops changes what? NOTHING. Guthrie was still in control. I live in Phillies country up here and everyday Ilisten to all my buddies say that Charlie Manuel doesn’t know how to handle a bullpen and is the worst game day decision maker in baseball. I agree with them that he is terrible. However I’m not so sure that Perlozzo isn’t right there with him.

To be technical, Tim Wakefield gave up the walkoff home run in the 2003 ALCS, but Little did leave in Pedro to give up the tying runs.

As a Sox fan, I, like the team, had given up on the game by the 9th inning, and thought Guthrie might as well get his first shutout in, it’d be cute. Then Perlazzo pulled Guthrie. Then I wanted them to win again just to make a point about how silly it was.

    Mike,

All the apologists will say that Sam did not drop the popup, and he did not allow the walks and hits that lost this game. They are absolutely correct. But they are completely wrong if they think Sam is a major league manager. He is not a leader of men, and this team shows it. Read the following quote from the Sun. “This series” refers to the Red Sox series.

    —————————————————————————-
Perlozzo spoke with catcher Ramon Hernandez before this series began and asked him what day he wanted to have off in the series. Hernandez’s response?

“He pretty much said, ‘It’s the Boston Red Sox and they are in first place. I don’t need any days off,’” Perlozzo said. “So he’s in there. It’s not like we are wearing him out. He’s only played in, like, 12 ballgames. If it gets hotter and he plays a lot in a row, then we’ll worry about it.”
    —————————————————————————-

This pretty much sums up all I need to know about Perlozzo. His team is entering a series against the division leader and he’s asking his number one catcher, the man who bats fourth, and who has been reasonably hot as of late if he wants to sit out a game or two. So we can watch Paul Bako bath ninth?

Did Perlozzo think this was a great quote that illustrates that his starting catcher is a gamer? It illustrates a ton to me. He asked one of his best players if he wanted out of a series against the division leader! Can you imagine the same thing happening in New York? Toronto? Tampa Bay? Minnesota? Detroit? Chicago? Oakland? Anywhere?

This is a tiny snapshot into how Perlozzo treats his club. The pitchers publicly asking out of games. Perlozzo asks his players if they want to sit out. How hard do you think the team plays for Sam?

I want the apologists to explain away that quote, and why he still belongs as the manager of a major league team.

How much are effigies of Sam Perlozzo going for in Baltimore? I’d like to burn one…

i am going to puke!!!! perlozzo most definitely has to go after today’s impersonation of a LUNATIC!!!!

this obviously is not the first time he has made such a moronic baseball decision this season, but let’s pray it will be his last. i still am in shock and awe at how he fills out his lineup card everyday. how he uses the bullpen is even ridiculous on most nights.

what about how he set the roster up out of spring training. this guy is LOST!!!! 12-13 pitchers out of ST, bynum on your bench? how many subpar versions of “fresh hands” Gomez guys do you need? this guy doesn’t have a clue. the bench is for your clutch 3 run homerun potential late in the game and defensive replacements, not for multiple guys who can play 4 infield positions. leicester instead of rob bell? what the hell is that?

you have an overworked bullpen, you need a stellar performance from a starter so you don’t have to go to the pen, and guthrie gives it to you. i don’t care what anyone says, the pitch count was low, guthrie wanted to stay in, ramon’s error, who cares, i would have left him in even if he had given up 3 runs, he would have still got you the win and completed the game. why on earth would you pull him!!!!!!!!!!?????

mazzone and treblehorn should be shot on site for not grabbing perlozzo like a rag doll by the collar and throwing him back on the bench instead of letting him go to the mound. i can’t believe that mazzone would have agreed with that move.

the orioles have a good team, perlozzo is going to cost them any chance, he can’t manage, do you think earl weaver would have ever even considered such a retarded move like that, NEVER!!!! do you think davey johnson would have done that? i don’t even think phil regan is that stupid.

it’s plainly obvious, this team has the players, but they are being led down the path to destruction. this should be the nail in the coffin….. prediction…..the team revolts against perlozzo after that bonehead move. you can’t play for a guy when he manages a baseball game like inspector clouseau. the unraveling is about to begin, all the wasted potential of 2007 because sam perlozzo can’t figure it out. but hey, are you surprised by any of this? i am certainly not.

now as for how to fix these problems, i’m too sick to my stomach to offer any advice right now. perhaps tomorrow.

I wrote on this very game over at the statistically speaking blog. I disagree on Ray, he should not have been tired after taking Saturday off and only throwing 8 pitches to get the save on Friday.

But taking out Guthrie was horrible. I wonder if he asked why he was taken out?

He did a fantastic job, and when the last pitch you threw induced a popup, you’ve done your job, no matter what the result.

    from rotoworld:
The Red Sox said it was hamstring tightness that caused Manny Ramirez to come out of Sunday’s game after eight innings.
If Ramirez needs a day off, the Red Sox will likely use Wily Mo Pena in left field on Monday.

I’m almost glad this happened. The local media has given Sam a free ride. The players suck so no blame should go to Sam is the common refrain from S Davis,P Schmuck,K Mills, D Forrester, J Zreibec, R Kubatko and others. Drew even had the gall on his blog tonight to call the Guthrie move “Hindsight”!? Thousands of O’s fans screamed the minute he left and it’s hindsight!?!? Bottom line is Sam,Crowley and everyone else needs to go but even then nothing would change. Until Angelos sells we have NO HOPE.
76 days to Training Camp. 6 days till Hershey VS Manchester! Odds of me watching another O’s game this year- 50-1.

I’ve been ill all night since that debacle. Perlozzo says he was going to give Guthrie a chance to go 1-2-3 but that was it since he’d never pitched past the 6th inning before.

    WHO CARES!!!

He had thrown 90 pitches and had owned Ortiz all day long. There is no excuse. Unlike every other pitcher on the team, Guthrie threw strikes. It’s mindboggling and Perlozzo is to blame. He is horrible and does not take responsibility for his actions. In Detroit, if Jim Leyland screws up, he says ‘I screwed up and it’s my fault”. Perlozzo just says if they made the correct plays, they would have won’. That may be true, but Guthrie still should never have been taken out of that game. Never.

SAM PERLOZZO MUST GO ! His mismanagement of the starting pitching has cost us games. Besides today’s fiasco how many times have we seen him pull starters too early. Eric bedard against tampa , 7 innings a shutout only 97 pitches. Jeremy Guthrie vs tampa 6 innings 67 pitches. Yes we won these two games but perlozzo’s continuing to pull starters on low pitch counts has caused our bullpen to be used up and ineffective. At the pace they are going the bullpen will be lucky to make it to the all star break. Back in the 70’s & 80’s there was no emphasis on pitch counts like today. Did Earl weaver dare take out Palmer, Flanagan, McGREGOR OR BODDICKER WITH A 5-0 lead in the 9th inning after 91 pitches and throwing 91 pitches and in control of the game. NO Way! And I don’t want to hear there were more injured pithers back in those days. To me it seems like pitchers in todays era are getting hurt more frequently than 20-30 years ago. And they are throwing less pitches and pitching every 5th day instead of every 4th day. Also why is it that the relievers can’t pitch more than 1 inning on this team. Other teams such as Clevland and Boston to name a couple will let the relievers go 2-3 innings. This saves on the number of relievers you use and rests the majority of the guys in the pen. Perlozzo has mishandled this pitching staff big time and must go. It’s really a shame bacause this team with the right manager could be a wild card contender ! But with Sammy we are doomed to a 10th straight losing season and we will be out of the running by the all star break.

    These are my thoughts: http://oriolepost.blogspot.com/2007/05/sam-perlozzo-why.html

Perhaps, I have been one of Perlozzo’s defenders since the season began as I perhaps just wanted to support the team. After what I saw today before I went out to dinner, I must say that I have not been impressed with Sam’s managing at all.

We were far better off leaving Guthrie in, than bringing Chris Ray *sigh*…

Sam really f’ed up on this one. Not good. Should he be fired, maybe; however, I cannot defend this one. He’s never been a genius, but today he’s really shown that he makes very poor decisions.

Simply put, we should be at .500 and have taken 2 of 3 from the Red Sox…

Sounds like there’s a ground swell of support for Sam being canned. I’m not about to jump on the train — yet; however, the philosophy of this organization must change or this team will be doomed.

  15. Mike Boehm says:

    May 13th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

Anthony I was a defender of Sam too for the longest time.

I hated Lee Mazilli so much that I would have been happy with a goat on a leash being given the managerial job. And I wanted Perlozzo to work out. I liked him at the stand mostly because he wasn’t Lee Mazilli (for the record, Sam IS a better manager than Lee Mazilli. That guy took pathetic to new and exciting levels)

But as the losses piled up we’ve kept seeing the same boneheaded mistakes again and again and again from Sam, and he’s not getting any better.

I was all about giving him some time to get used to being in charge, but the rookie mistakes are still happening 2 years into the Perlozzo experiment.

The one thing that I’ve ignored about Perlozzo that should have been a huge red flag from day one is that he’s an Angelos guy.

This is the manager than Peter Angelos wanted in charge from the start.

That should tell us something. Angelos has proven time and time again to not have the first clue about anything involving baseball, so why should we be expecting that all of a sudden he’s 100% right about his managerial choice?

In actuality, the fact that Angelos DOES like Perlozzo is probably a good reason to think he’s not any good.

I agree that Chris Ray should not escape this debate unscathed. thats the THIRD heart breaking game he’s lost us to division rivals. in a month and a god damn half. so very inexcusable.

It’s that Sam’s making the same mistakes every other night! For two years! That I can’t accept.

As you said, pulling Gutrie is inexcusable!!!! What the hell was he thinking. Even with the number of injuries to our starters, there were many games that we should have won, but do to horrible management decisions we of course lost those games. HOW DO YOU PULL A STARTER THAT’S THROWING A GEM? It leaves me to believe that he is at least slightl mentally impaired. He has got to go. Even though our bats have not been doing much to start, I believe that we still have a team that can have a winning season. There is only one reason that we will not. That is Perlozzo. He tries to be to careful and show some balls and then when he finally decides to show that he has some balls it is far from the right time. However, the bottom line is that Angelos operates this team like Perlozzo manages it. We will be stuck with him for the rest of the season. It’s a reality that us die-hard fans need to accept because Angelos is a CHUMP and does not have the balls to make a big decision in season. Also as you stated, the entire coaching staff needs to go. They also make stupid decisions. Having Millar go from first to third? Again, what kind of call is that? I like Millar and respect his passion for the game, but the bottom line is that he is slow and the coaching staff should be aware of that before making a stupid decision. Like Perlozzo, it leaves me to believe that the coaching staff is also at least slightly mentally challenged. It’s time to start from scratch. I don’t meen the players, I actually think that we have an above average team, especially our young pitchers when healthy, but the manager and coaching staff. This needs to happen now for us to have any shot at a winning season!!!!!!!!!

There is a time to pull a starter that is pitching a heck of a game and a time to leave him in, Sam made the wrong move this time. If this was 1977 instead of 2007, there would be no question as to whether you leave a young starter in there to finish a game in the ninth. Pitch count meant little back then. Sometimes managers have a tentecy to over-manage, and Sam perhaps thought Guthrie pitched a great game and wanted to take him out before he got in a jam. Do ya think Earl Weaver would have taken the ball from Scott McGregor with one out in the ninth in a 5-0 lead, and handed it to Don Stanhouse?? It is a different game today than years ago, but unless a guy is pitching on fumes and has over 120 pitches, you leave the guy in to finish. The good news is..it is only “one game”. If we take 2 out of three from the Jays, then it will even out. I like Sam Perlozzo. I like this team. Let’s give them both a chance before crying out for a new manager.

My buddy sent me this site and I am relieved. Ever since I read “coaching visit to the mound” on MLB Gametracker today, I have been sick to my stomach. It is nice to hear some logic from all of you. I, too, was a Sam supporter, especially following the arrival of Leo Mazzone. However, the last two seasons, and especially the early days of this one have been unbearable. The Orioles are a solid ballclub. They are not a team loaded with superstars, but they have the ingredients to be a solid, 85-88 win team. Unfortunately, game after game, Perlozzo not only mismanages the pitching staff, but seems to have no idea about basic baseball. As Oriole fans, we are all familiar with Earl’s mantra of playing for the 3-run homer. But, with a team whose 3-hole hitter has openly said he is trying to hit more singles than homeruns, you must play the best form of baseball- station to station. So many times, the Orioles will have men of first and second with none out and not score a run. Instead of a bunt to get 2 men into scoring position, this is the normal line score . . . Miguel Tejada strikes out swinging, Ramon Hernandez/Aubrey Huff grounds into double play. Then 6 innings later, the O’s lose by one run. Lastly, Perlozzo is certainly not a leader of men. It would make my day to see a Jim Leyland-esque figure in the dugout. Someone who not only exudes confidence, but will accept nothing but perfection. The Orioles clubhouse could use an outburst like Leyland had in early April last year, proclaiming “We might *expletive* lose, but we are going to play 9 innings of fundamental baseball.” Someone make the t-shirts and I will be the first to buy . . . SAM MUST GO!

  23. Heathir Irvin says:

    May 13th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Dom– Sure, the Orioles are still in second place. But I think the credit for that should go to the injuries and issues the Yanks and Blue Jays are dealing with than anything Perlozzo has done. The team is under .500 and has a 111-143 record managing.

(I also just found out while searching for Perlozzo’s record that his middle name is Benedict. There’s a joke in there somewhere.)

I supported Perlozzo when he got the job, but it’s becoming clear that things aren’t working out. The stupid mistakes over and over and over again are just too much.

Today was the last straw for me. (Actually, Saturday afternoon’s bullpen use was, but this really made me blow my top.) I don’t want to hear the “hindsight is 20/20″ arguement, because I was angry that he was pulling Guthrie to begin with. I knew bad things were going to happen from there.

Roch’s reporting in his blog that Guthrie said he felt fine and wanted to stay in the game, but Perlozzo pulled him anyways. My mother–who follows baseball through my dad and I’s conversations–even said she didn’t understand why they took Guthrie out.

This team played amazing baseball today for 8.1 innings. I am confident that Guthrie could have got those last two outs–he already got out of two jams earlier by getting double play balls from Ortiz and Manny. From the dropped pop up there was a lot of bad baseball, but I think it all stemmed from Perlozzo’s move to remove Guthrie. There’s quotes from Beckett (I believe) that said he knew as soon as Guthrie was yanked that the Sox were going to win it.

Someone needs to be done about this, though I’m sure it won’t cause Perlozzo is the guy Angelos wanted in the job all along. From the top down, this organization can be such a joke.

Wonder what Davey Johnson is up to these days……

Who else thinks good ol’ Kevin helped out by taking his time and making a semi-bad throw? He did a good job making sure it wasn’t obvious by not throwing it over Ray’s head and not taking too much time. He never wanted to leave Boston and deep down couldn’t help beating his former teamates today, lol.

Mark Miller said that if we take 2 of 3 from Toronto - things will even out? Well that would be 3-3 in 6 games v Boston & Toronto. But without the ignorant decision we would be 4-2 over those games!

I know Sam doesn’t blow 1 game himself out of every 6, but really, his managing decisions may cost the team 4-8 losses per season. Unlike Weaver, he’s not outfoxing other teams and gaining us any victories to make up for his mistakes.

Just curious, did Palmer or Dempsey have any comments on pulling out Guthrie?

  27. AJC Peoria says:

Perlozzo’s mismanagement of the pen is making Duquette and Flanagan look pretty stupid in investing so much $$ down there. The other GMs have said that it was a ridiculous thing to do. Perhaps what they meant was it was ridiculous to give the tools to a manager who doesn’t know how to use tem?

  28. gleich says:

“[Guthrie] pitched even better later in the game, so I don’t know what happened,” Ortiz said. “That was kind of weird. The guy was dealing the whole game and just coming out like that, I was like, what happened? But their manager wanted to get him out of the game, for any kind of reason. Thanks, anyway.”

Palmer wasn’t calling the game. It was Thorne and Martinez. But I was listening to the radio sound anyway because Joe Angel just sounds better.

The MASN post game show though proved to be the joke we all know it is. Those turds didn’t even both to ask Perlozzo why he pulled Guthrie. The only question anyone cared to hear an answer to and no one asked it.

Tom Davis went nuts on the post game radio show though. I’m sure he was called in on the carpet this morning for making disparaging remarks about the team. Angelos doesn’t stand for that.

But Tom Davis was right in every complaint he had.

i personally also think the relievers that came in were in such shock at this MORONIC move by perlozzo the bozo that they were in a dopey daze. a totally different frame of mind when coming into a game for absolutely no reason. perlozzo has had enough time to justify his title, sorry sammy, your time is up. thanks for coming out.

I didn’t see the game but wow.

Maybe Sam has Ray on his fantasy team. Either way…I say promote Leo to Manager and see if he takes the gig over his buddy sam…Why not…we have nothing else to lose…

Yeah, the announcers and the press let Perlozzo OFF EASY.

If this was Boston, Perlozzo was managing the Red Sox, he would have been burned in effigy.

Folks, I am now referring to yesterday as the Mother’s Day Massacre…

    http://oriolepost.blogspot.com/2007/05/game-yesterday-mothers-day-massacre.html

I’m still upset a day later at Perlozzo, just stupid — really, really, stupid.

Just a programming note for everyone…

Heathir’s preview of the Toronto series is written and waiting to be released to you. But I pushed back it’s release time to 12pm EST today just to let us work this whole Perlozzo anger out of our system.

From the look of the comments so far (and it’s only 10am) we still need a few hours to process through what Anthony has rightfully dubbed as the Mother’s Day Massacre.

But after we’ve all lost our voices screaming at each other over how dumb Sam is, don’t forget to come back to Oriole Magic this afternoon to read Heathir’s preview of the Blue Jays series.

It’s a good analysis of the upcoming series, and Heathir deserves a lot of credit for fighting off the blinding rage of yesterday’s loss to write it.

So come on back later today!

For once, I am glad that I can’t watch the O’s play here in Illinois. To see it all happen in gory detail may have been too much. I know that I was sick enough to puke when I learned about the 9th inning massacre.

How about Eddie Murray for manager? Frank Robinson? Davey Johnson?

  35. Sean C. says:

    May 14th, 2007 at 7:39 am

How many more chances must Perlozzo be given to prove he is a moron? This is crazy. I’m still pissed off about this whole thing. I don’t think going 6-0 on the rest of the road trip can even make me forget about this loss. There is no excuse for what he did. Guthrie even said that he wasn’t tired. Why was he pulled then? It makes no sense at all. The bullpen wasn’t “fresh” like Perlozzo thinks it is. I don’t know how much more of this I can take.

  36. Mike Boehm says:

    May 14th, 2007 at 7:40 am

Eddie Murray is too passive. I love the guy, but not as a manager.

Frank Robinson wouldn’t accept less than perfection from a team. He flipped his lid on Soriano when the guy was trying to dictate what positions he would and wouldn’t play.

That’s the kind of guy I like. Someone who leads, not who asks the players what they feel like doing.

But personally I’d be kissing Davey Johnson’s ass trying to get him back if I was in charge. HE’d be my first pick.

And I’d bring in BJ Surhoff as the new hitting coach. Seriously. The guy undertands fundemental hitting and was always reported to love working with the younger hitters on their swings.

And as far as I know he’s still right here in Baltimore!

I vote for Frank. Remember what he did with those pitchers back in 89? Who do you think was more talented: Bedard, Cabrera, Loewen, Guthrie, and Trachsel… or Ballard, McDonald, Milacki, Mesa, Holton. Your right, Frank wouldn’t take no sh… And he would know what works for winning games - the bottom line - Sammy & Peter forgot about that.

I have never felt so disgusted as I did this weekend.

No one has talked much about Saturday, but that was equally as disastrous. We were fully in that game and we were only losing by one run. So I could not believe that Perlozzo left Leicester in when he clearly could not find the plate in the 7th. He threw 14 straight balls before he was pulled (or pulled himself) because of injury.

Meanwhile while this debacle on the mound was going on, Perlozzo was quietly losing the game in the dugout. Despite the obvious failure of our pitcher, for some reason he couldn’t bother to call down to the bull pen to give someone a chance to warm up. How much longer did he really expect Leicester to keep pitching? If it hadn’t been for the injury, he probably would have walked in at least one run and who knows what else.

So lets see here… On Saturday we leave the guy who can’t find the plate for even one strike in an inning and on Sunday we take out the guy who’s 3-hit the red sox. Way to freaking go Sam.

saturday wasnt a millionth as depressing as sunday. we were all ready to concede saturday long before the game even started. and personally, i dont give a damn who we hire. i am confident that any moron off the street who has heard of the game baseball, even if they dreamed it in some kooky acid induced night mare would do a better job of managing than this ass.

As much as I’d love to have Davey Johnson, you know Angelos hates him and Davey feels the same. I’d love to get Frank back, but this is mostly pipe dreams as Perlozzo will likely manage the entire season. Angelos has never fired anyone midseason.

If I owned the team, not only would Perlozzo be fired immediately after that game, I wouldn’t even give him money to make it back to Baltimore to empty his office. He should be wondering the streets of Boston begging for bus fare.

I’m always the last one to these types of parties it seems.

    …(clears throat)….

I know I am still full of rage that would make Stephen Colbert jealous and, if I were not heavily medicated, I would be even worse then all of you.

    So let me say:

Perlozzo must go. When you consider the fact that Perlozzo’s greatest asset is the fact he’s friends with the pitching coach (the pitching coach who has not been able to work nearly as much magic as was hoped), it’s time for him to leave. Perhaps not immediately, as I believe he should get one more chance (I’m too forgiving of a person, I know), but he should go soon.

  49. Lauren T. says:

    May 14th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

I 100% agree that Perlozzo needs to go…but who would be the manager then? Trebelhorn? Trembley? I just don’t know, cause it doesn’t seem like anyone’s up for the challenge…

  50. AJC Peoria says:

    May 14th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

Davey Johnson and Frank Robinson would be up for the challenge, but Angelos’ ego is too large - all credit has to go to him for success.

I would say that the level of success for the Os is the past 9 years is 100% attributable to Peter Angelos. Yes, all credit goes to him.

Seriously, Dusty Baker is looking for a job. I’ve watched what he did with Cubs for a few years. If he is the next O’s manager - I’m done with the team. He will ruin all the promising pitchers and then leave.

PAGE 2…WHERE SAM PERLOZZO IS HAVING A WORSE DAY THAN CHRIS MOLTISANTI…priceless!

  52. Mark Miller says:

    May 14th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

The manager manages, and the players play. Sam Perlozzo can’t throw a pitch, hit a hanging slider, or cover the bag for a less than perfect toss. Let’s not blame this loss entirely upon the one guy who does’nt swing a bat or put a fielders glove on. the ninth inning in Boston was a meltdown. Sam pulled Guthrie with a 5 run lead in the 9th inning. Major league pitchers are payed to give up less than 5 runs per “nine’ innings. If the manager has low confidence in his bullpen, then be like Billy martin was with his 1982 Oakland A’s; have the starters pitch their arms out..Rick Langford,Steve McCatty,MIke Norris. The odds of 5 runs coming across in 1 inning is remote. I beleive that if Eric Bedard or Daniel Cabrerra has a shutout in the ninth..Sam keeps them in. Guthrie was in unchartered waters, and Sam made a mistake. If the Orioles win the game then there is no second guessing. Sam Perlozzo is the manager of this team, and deserves every opportunity to build a foundation for a winning team. Cut him some slack!!

  53. Anthony Amobi says:

    May 15th, 2007 at 9:24 am

Mark, I don’t think Sam should be fired (I have said it numerous times on the record), but what happened Sunday was disaster of massive proportions.

After that display, fans should have the right to question the fitness of the Orioles’ manager…
