Is Daniel Cabrera For Real?
Anthony Amobi - MVN/Oriole Magic
It’s open thread time. We know what happened on Tuesday night against the Yankees. Daniel Cabrera once again had another great performance which was only hampered by a two-run home run from Alex Rodriguez.
There’s only simple question that needs to be answered - Is Daniel Cabrera finally for real? If so, should the Baltimore Orioles keep or deal him?
It’s your chance to write the post.

Gotta keep him now. I have to say I had no faith in the guy, but he has proven everyone wrong so far. The biggest sign of his growth was the fact that he did not retaliate after Latroy Hawkins nearly hit Scott in the head. Way to go Danny!

I think it’s for real.
The home runs concern me a bit but as long as he quits walking so many people…I guess you can live with that.

BTW I think they should keep him.

This is the guy you take a risk with. Offer him a contract this offseason along with Guthrie, Markakis, Jones.
Your building blocks are here, lock them up now.

I agree with everyone — I would like for D-Cab to build up a stronger track record before we all shout “Hallelujah”, but he’s no doubt shown maturity and focus he’s not shown in years’ past.
If he keeps this up, the Orioles must strongly consider giving him a extended, but reasonable contract. We may be jumping the gun, but you cannot find a young man with Cabrera’s ability just anywhere.

I’m finally convinced. He’s turned the corner. He’s clearly figured out the best way to utilize his skills.
The question is, can he maintain it or will he lose focus….again.
I’m inclined to think he’s got it this time.

Great win for the team and Danny Boy.
If there is a pitching coach of the year award, it should go to our new guy whom we stole from Florida.
This year is awesome. Even if we don’t make the playoffs it will another “Why Not?” season to remember.

People, if you haven’t checked out the Yankee page on MVN today, it’s well worth your time.
It features great quotes from the Yankee writers like this one about last night’s game…
Honestly, I’m about near freaking tears right now. This is too painful to watch.
And the comments section on that article is absolutely priceless.

It isnt time to decide any of that yet. He is for real as long as he keeps proving it. He wasnt until he proved it. So anyone who makes a blanket statement that he has turned the corner or is now a finished product, is as guilty of jumping the gun as those who said to trade him while we could still get something for him the last several years. Just keep sending him out there and let the results answer the question for you. Just like each of the last three managers have for several years now. Anyone who answers your question whether or not to trade him, without knowing what we get in return is wasting as much time as you are by asking it. I would trade anyone from Roberts to Markakis to Cabrera to Wieters for the right deal.

Lucky, you’re right. Two good months does not underscore four years worth of mediocrity. Despite the Orioles’ record, I still consider this an evaluation and let’s be realistic here — this is about building a team that consistently wins — not about building for a stretch run.
I say if he keeps it up, consider it; however, I’m cautiously optimistic about things right now.
It’s way too early in my mind to say he’s completely turned the corner. However, he in his role beating the Yankees as the Orioles did only helps to build his case.
As someone mentioned, he didn’t go head-hunting after the Scott-Hawkins incident. That’s enough right there to tell me something has changed with this guy.

We shouldn’t deal him. We waited too long for the potential to show up to let someone else reap the rewards now. Moreover, having dealt Bedard, we may actually have stumbled into a situation where we still have a true #1 making an already great trade even better. Let him pitch out the season at least. If he keeps pitching this way, the offers will only improve down the road if you do decide to trade him. Between a solid corps of young pitching, a strong bullpen which will get better with Ray’s return in ‘09, Wieters, another top pick in a few weeks and maybe even Teixeira, things finally seem to be going in the right direction. Retaining a legit ace candidate is important if we plan on contending in a couple of seasons.

By the way, I think we’ll know if Cabrera has really turned the corner AFTER he has a bad outing. I’m sure it will happen at some point this season so if he can bounce back and not let it snowball, then you can really see the development.

Gregg, good point about Cabrera after a bad outing…

For years we’ve known that he has potential and know he is finally living up to it! Now it may be to early to shout to the Heavens about this.
To talk about trading him here would be very very very stupid. As long as the O’s are playing good ball and have a shot at the playoffs, they can’t trade him.
The only way we should trade him is if we can’t sign him to a good contract. He likes it in Baltimore, and even moreso now that he is winning, and we like having him here.

I’ve been the biggest cabrera fan since he’s been in the league, and i actually have a #35 jersey and the fact that he’s turned a corner is such a relief

Every player that stays in the league has to make adjustments. Finally, Danny has made an adjustment in his style, but eventually the rest of the league will adapt. The question is will Danny keep one step ahead? Kranitz’ job with Danny is not over yet. Eventually, Danny will need to use an expanded repertoire of pitches. Will the conmtrol issues resurface then?
Finally, danny will have “arrived” if/when the other GMs start making impressive trade offers for him. When they believe, then I will believe.

“Someday he’ll be great if the light ever comes on.” That’s what all the experts said about Cabrera. Personnally, I was beginning to think the light was never installed. I now freely conceed I was wrong about Cabrera, apparantly the light was installed and it turns out to be a 500 watter. Nothing breeds sucess like sucess.
