Game #47: Clutch Hitting in Short Supply For Milwaukee as Bucs Win

PNC Park | 7:05 | Gorzelanny vs. Dave Bush | Box

In a reverse of last night’s contest where the Pirates couldn’t knock anyone in, the Brewers put 19 men on base via hit or walk, but stranded 14 runners. Milwaukee was only retired in order once and that was in the 9th innings.

Starter Tom Gorzelanny struggled with command, but allowed only two runs in five innings despite yielding eight hits and four walks. Dave Bush fared worse. He gave up six of the Pirates eight runs in five innings. He surrendered homers to Jason Bay and Xavier Nady.

Nate McLouth had four hits and scored three times hitting out of the three whole. Chris Gomez, starting at short, drove home the Pirates final tallies with a single.

Pre-Game Thoughts
The Pirate offense has been stymied by the Brewers in the first two games of this series. Dave Bush will try to make this a sweep. His 2008 mark is 1-4. His ERA is worse than six and he has yet to retire more than 18 hitters in any of his starts. Bush got a no decision in his last start against the Pirates, which was last September 12.

Bush is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA against the Buccos for his career. He is 0-1 in three starts at PNC. Freddy Sanchez is 7-13 against Bush. The rest of the club is 11-61 off him.

Tom Gorzelanny has won two of his last three starts. But the last one was another ugly one against the Cubs in which he gave up seven runs in six innings.

His last effort against Milwaukee was the same September 12th outing that Bush started. Gorzo is 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA lifetime vs. Milwaukee. The Brewers are just 18-78 vs. Gorzelanny. Bill Hall is 1-10 with six strikeouts.
