The Texas Rangers All-Star Game Statue On Parade

Now who wouldn't want this in the middle of their living room? - verndogs/Flickr.com

While perusing MLB.com in an apparently futile attempt to find something worth expending my recently acquired $50 MLB.com gift card on (I’m currently leaning towards this), I stumbled across MLB.com’s auction page.

Their most highly touted items? The “Statues on Parade,” a series of 42 Major League Baseball-decorated Statue of Liberty replicas that were scattered throughout New York City to help promote the 79th Major League All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.

The game is now in the books. And those 42 statues are now up for auction, with all net proceeds from the sales going to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of America - a more than worthy charity.

But my jaw nearly hit the floor when I first caught sight of the asking price: $5,000. Just to open the bidding. And $500 more for DHL Freight-related shipping costs.

For an 8½-foot team statue. Wow.

I consider it somewhat remarkable that, with just under 48 hours until the bidding closes, 14 of the 42 statues have already received at least one bid. The Boston Red Sox statue is unsurprisingly leading the way, raking in 11 bids and currently sitting at $8,000.

The Texas Rangers statue? Zero bids. So if you’re looking for that perfect $5,000 - erm, $5,500 gift for the very special Rangers fan in your life, there you go.

And they say the economy is slumping.
