Hinske on the trade block already? Dodgers Interested?
Hinske--Tommy Rancel
The LA Times is reporting this morning that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has been in contact with several teams about finding a short term, cheap replacement at 3B until Nomar Garciaparra is healthy. The article list Phillies 1B/3B Wes Helms(believable) and the Rays IF/OF Eric Hinske.
General Manager Ned Colletti has been speaking to other clubs about possible trades, targeting players with short and inexpensive contracts for what they expect to be short-term replacement duty. They are believed to be interested in Philadelphia’s Wes Helms. Tampa Bay’s Eric Hinske is also reportedly on the market.
This is the first time I’ve heard that Hinske is “on the market.” Hinske is a pretty good platoon partner for Gomes and is the only option on the roster to back up Carlos Pena at first. I highly doubt the Rays will trade Hinske. If the Rays were actively shopping Hinske they wouldn’t have sent Guzman down a day before doing it. Also Joe Maddon has already gone as far as naming Hinske the starting RF on Opening Day in Baltimore. If the Rays were thinking about trading him I doubt Joe would make such a move.

Garciaparra won’t be out long…though undoubtedly will be injured a few more times during the season. I don’t see Dodgers giving up any prospects for short-term replacement. DeWitt was a top draft pick they’re very high on, they just didn’t expect him until 2009 or 2010. They will give him a chance to taste big league ball until Garciaparra and Abreu are healthy. Then by June LaRoche is coming back…actually 3B is a crowded position for dodgers for all the press it get…Abreu, LaRoche, and DeWitt are all 3B prospects they’ve refused to trade so far and another top prospect on the roster, Delwyn Young, can play 3B, just not well. So unless they want to swap like Hinske for a Chan Ho Park or a Juan Pierre, don’t see the Dodgers wanting such a trade.

Do you think the Rays are interested in Matt Murton from the Cubs as another outfielder?

We here at RA would have liked them to sign Murton, but the team isn’t willing to give up what the Cubs want for him.

I haven’t really seen what the Cubs are asking for. I know they sent Sean Marshall down as well. Any chance of both heading to the old Webb City site (ah yes, someone who remembers St. Pete in the old days).
