Jason Michaels DFA’d; Should We be Interested?.

According to Anthony Castrovincethe Indians will DFA Jason Michaels. RF has been a hole for the Rays all season. Even with the newly acquired Gabe Gross, who hasn’t exactly set the field on fire, it remains a question mark . Michaels is 32, can play all three OF positions and is a Tampa native. He went to Jesuit HS, who’s notable alumni include Lou Pinella and Brad Radke. He is also a University of Miami alum.

So how does Michaels compare against the current Rays back up OF? The answer is fairly well. He has had a bad start to the season, but like I said before neither Gross or Nate Haynes are making a good case for themselves.

NAME CAREER CAREER VS LHP CAREER VS RHP
G.GROSS .240/.342/.398 .088/.257/.158 .254/.350/.420
N.HAYNES .256/.304/.279 .143/.143/.143 .263/.314/.288
J.MICHAELS .277/.351/.413 .294/.377/.449 .265/.331/.387

I’d be in favor of dropping Haynes like two weeks ago and taking a chance on Michaels. Gross gets on base more and has a great arm so I’d keep him over Haynes. Michaels hits lefties better than both of them and I could see Gomes/Michaels vs LHP with Gross/Hinske against RHP even though Gross and Michaels are almost even against RHP.

Maybe I’m just bored on an off day, but it couldn’t hurt to take a flier. Cliff Floyd’s return is also coming soon, so something will have to give.  Jacque Jones was also released, but I’d stay away from him.

Stay away from Jones like the plague.
