Redlegs Rundown
Manager is now focus
With Bob Castellini’s informal announcement that Wayne Krivsky is still his guy, we can now shift our attention to who will manage this group. Let the speculation begin…
Joe Girardi-might be first in line to take over for the soon-to-be-fired Joe Torre. The Yankees are probably looking for someone with ties to the pinstripes, and Girardi would be a good fit. During the summer, it appeared as if Girardi was the leading candidate for the Reds’ job. Probably not anymore.
Joe Torre-would Torre be up for another managerial position so soon after being fired? At his age, is he wanting to manage anymore? True, his wife has ties to the Cincinnati area, but how much more would Torre manage? He’d probably be a good fit and a great hire for the Reds at least image-wise.
Tony LaRussa-Now that Walt Jocketty will not be the Reds’ next GM, odds are LaRussa also won’t be wearing a Reds uniform. (Thank God)
Bob Brenly-Yes, he has a World Series ring. But, did Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, and Luis Gonzalez win it for him? He was a failure after winning the title and hasn’t managed since. Is there a good reason for this?
Pete Mackanin-Please NO! I don’t care what a great sense of humor he has. He didn’t do enough to prove he’s the long-term answer for the Cincinnati Reds.
Dusty Baker-kill me now!!
Who else would be on this list?

Joel Skinner of the Indians, maybe? What about Ken Macha?

What about Bobby Valentine? He must be ready to come back from Japan by now.

What about Kevin Kennedy? He was rumored before Narron took over.

The only name I’ve heard of those is Bobby Valentine. I honestly think the Reds need a proven name to sell to the fan base. They’ve had interim guys (Miley, Mackanin, Knight) and retreads (Boone, Narron) before. I think they need a name guy who has had some level of success.

I came here to bring up Valentine and saw that Jason had already done it. I don’t want anything to do with anyone on that list not named Brenly or Pete Mac…. and even then, I am only bringing them in for interviews and would not top my list.

Doug, who would be your choice if you could have anyone who currently is out of work (or is currently an interim manager)?

I would take Valentine honestly. Doubt he comes here, but I would have had his phone ringing a while ago.

The recently fired Jim Tracy has to be on the short list given his Cincy-era ties (I think he’s a Hamilton native?). Marty is a big fan and we all know how much weight he carries for better and (mostly) worse.

Jim Tracy has now been fired from two jobs. I think he got the shaft in L.A., and he never had a shot with the Pirates (who does?)…I’m just not sure about him. And Good Lord I hope that LaRussa rumor isn’t true.
