Redlegs Rundown

Janish Delivers Game Winning RBI with First Big League Hit

Paul Janish drove up from Triple-A Louisville this morning to join the big league club after Jeff Keppinger’s bad injury last night. He didn’t get the start in the game, but before it was over he had the greatest impact in his first big league game.

Bronson Arroyo steam-rolled the Marlins, pitching seven shutout innings. He was helped out by RBI’s from Jerry Hairston, Ken Griffey Junior, Brandon Phillips, Edwin Encarnacion, and Adam Dunn’s seventh homerun. The game looked sealed heading into the ninth, the Reds led 6-0. The bullpen had a 2007 flashback, and gave up six runs, capped off by a Cody Ross three-run homerun. Jared Burton blanked the Fish in the 10th, and then Paul Janish delivered the goods with his first hit. With runners on first and second with two out, Janish singled down the right field line off of Renyel Pinto to score pinch runner Johnny Cueto to win the ballgame.

In addition to the game winning hit, Janish flashed his glove on some nice plays. He had one of the best personal moments in my opinion when he found his mom and hugged her after being mobbed by teammates. This win is the Reds’ third straight, as they improve to 18-23. Cincinnati will go for the four-game sweep tomorrow night. According to ESPN.com, Matt Belisle will get the call. If you’re at church tomorrow, well, you’ll know what to do. Welcome to the big leagues Paul Janish, let this be one of many bright moments for you in a Reds’ uniform.

Actually, Mother Nature might take care of the Matt Belisle portion of the rotation tonight. “Harang, Volquez, and pray for rain” should be the new slogan for the Reds.

btw…anyone see Freel try to kill Janish after he got the hit? I can’t believe people don’t pull muscles or tweak injuries in those pileups/mob scenes. But, great way for Paul to get his first hit. A shame it had to get to that point, but a win is a win! 3 in a row!!! woohoo!!!

Janish actually DID come out of that pile-up with a bloody nose. I think I remember someone on another team a few years ago pulling a muscle or spraining an ankle during a post-game pileup like that and having to actually go on the DL. I like the passion… but sheesh… do you have to POUND on the guy like that?

I have to say, I was severely disappointed in the Reds last night… NO ONE HIT JANISH WITH THE SHAVING CREAM PIE DURING HIS POST-GAME INTERVIEW!!! How does that not happen???

Can we just start throwing Arroyo on 3 days rest ALL THE TIME?

I didn’t know Janish had a bloody nose until I read the story about it from CTR. I know he’ll live and all, but good Lord.

And yeah, the Reds should adjust the rotation to let Arroyo throw on three days rest just like they adjust it to allow Harang to throw on his normal rest. Why not?? If he throws like that everytime, wouldn’t it be the same circumstances?
