Jay Bruce Mania Arrives in Reds Win
Jay Bruce mania has finally landed in Cincinnati. Baseball’s top prospect brought his .366 average and 10 homers to the Reds big league club to face Pittsburgh. It turns out the kid is better than advertised.
The kid’s first at-bat came with one on in the first inning, and he took a respectable four pitch walk. Snell offered him four balls, expecting the anxious rookie to swing, but Bruce didn’t chase. He came back up in the third, and with a crack of the bat his first big league hit fell in left field. Down 3-0, Adam Dunn borrowed some spotlight from Mr. Bruce. With two on, he slammed another towering shot into the Cincinnati night, three rows from the top, giving the Reds a 4-3 advantage. In the sixth, Bruce recording his first RBI, driving in Paul Bako with a single. He wasn’t done, and in the seventh, Bruce missed a homer by a few feet, settling for an RBI-double. The Pirates made a comeback, but the Reds sealed the deal with a 9-6 win.
Johnny Cueto got the win for the Reds, he went five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, striking out four to record his third win of his career and season. After mishaps in the bullpen, Francisco Cordero finished it off with his 11th save.
Jay Bruce was the story of the night. He went a perfect 3-3, with a double, two-RBI, two walks, and two runs scored. Adam Dunn’s hot tear continues, he went 2-5 with his 14th homerun and four RBI. Joey Votto went 3-5 in a solid night.
His 1.000 batting average may not last long, but Bruce can certainly smile on that number when he goes to bed tonight. The Reds will host the Pirates tomorrow night at 7:10, and Bronson Arroyo will be pitching on short rest, just the way he likes it. Corey Patterson better get comfy in his spot on the bench, center field is now occupied.
