Red Sox, Papelbon agree to contract

According to Amalie Benjamin of Boston.com, the Red Sox have reached a one year contract agreement with Jonathan Papelbon for $775,000.
The closer had made it well known that he was looking for $900,000 this season, consistent with the contract that Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard signed at a similar point in his career last year after his National League MVP season.
It appears that the Red Sox and Papelbon settled in between each of their “asks” putting Papelbon ahead of his contemporaries in similar contract positions like Prince Fielder, Nick Markakis, Cole Hamels, and fellow closer Bobby Jenks, many of whom have been dissatisfied with their teams offers.
Papelbon’s contract is as much as any closer with similar service time has received heading into the third year of their career. This is consistent with the $750,000 that Mariano Rivera received from the Yankees in 1998 before he agreed to his first big money contract.

It is, in fact, $5,000 more than Mariano’s 1998 deal, a symbolic gesture to the “new Mariano”, while staying in the spirit of the rule. Paps gets the nod as being the best, with the Sox saying your time is near.
Aardsma was impressive today, and just seeing his Red Sox (as in days of olde) made me want him on the 25 man roster; and he signed his contract today, too. If he has matured sufficiently ready to settle down, and mind his control, he could be the final piece for this Bullpen . . . or not.

If Paps continues what he’s done over the next five years or so, people will be talking about him being the best closer of all time.

Vato:
That’s assuming JJ Putz doesn’t do the same thing. Putz was better than Paps last year. And we’re still a long way from either of them being anywhere near the best ever.

In case anybody is curious on how the model of City of Palms Park is coming along:

That’s after about four hours, so I still have a bit more to go before I start my conversion, mainly on stuff outside of the park and details inside (dugouts, specifically). I’m going away for the weekend, but i’ll post updates as they’re rendered.

Nice to see Jacoby get back on track today. And Manny Delcarmen looks great.
Hope Beckett’s OK…
