3/25: ...and we're back

Prev. Gm:

Boston Red Sox (0-0) @ Oakland Athletics (0-0)

Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-0, -.--) @ Joe Blanton (0-0, -.--)

6:05 AM EDT | Tokyo Dome (Tokyo, Japan)

TV: NESN | RADIO: WEEI, XM 177

GAME NOTES: Wow... I'm making a game thread again. Baseball's back, baby! Today, Matsuzaka begins his sophomore campaign and a lot of people expect it to be a lot better than his 17-12, 4.40 ERA season last year. We'll start finding out this morning, as the game starts at an impossibly early time. It'll certainly be a strange feeling to wake up at dawn and flip the game on. (Quick aside to the community: As you can see, the chat function is also back this year for game threads. Last year, the chat was hit or miss... sometimes there were a decent amount of people in the chat, other times not so much. Should we continue making the chat option available?)

I wasn't awake to see it, but is it safe to assume Matsuzaka was pulled just based on pitch count? In his first outing, maybe they didn't want to let him go too deep into the game.

This is making me cringe. Where's Christopher Lloyd as the Angel Umpire AL when you need him?

Tell me about it...

Tim, the A's blogger and I are in the chat if anyone's interested.

I've got the game being recorded and am trying my damnedest not to look at the box-score. I might have to turn off my computer at work...

Great time for Moss' first homer of his career!

Yup, just another slow start for Manny. Not like he's been working his ass off the entire offseason or anything.

We're gonna have to keep an eye on Paps. A's are tagging his fastball.

And Manny just stands at the plate again, not that I'm not liking his 4 RBI performance though!

Evan, I agree. I woke up just as Paps was finishing his warmups (freaky huh?) and I can't say I was pleased with his outing. Was he trying to mix that slider in? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since he's in Japan but when he gets back to the states, he's got to start pwning people.

9.00 ERA won't cut it.

#10 was all me. I need to get back in the swing of things and stop forgetting to punch in my name before I comment.

1-0!

WIN!

Though from what I hear, it wasn't particularly pretty. Watching it right now...DiceK looked awful to start (nervous?), but he's been great in th 3rd and 4th so far.

Just as an aside, looking at the box score, can anyone tell me why we went to Snyder in the 6th?

Oh well, I'll shut up...we'll take 1-0.

I figured Dice-K would start a little slow -- shoot, these guys are probably still in spring training mode physically. He came around, so that was good for the Sox. But like Evan said, the A's managed to tag Papelbon a little bit in the ninth; that's not so good.

Dice-K finally starts to settle down and Tito pulls him for Kyle Freakin Snyder! What's going on with that?

I'll take the win though. And I'm already loving a motivated Manny.

Brandon Moss! JD, stay on the shelf for a couple more games.

I suspect that was the reason. Boo!

Well, boo, but on the other hand it's not like he got a full length spring training.

"And I’m already loving a motivated Manny."

I'm one of Manny's biggest fans but he still hasn't learned how to run after contact. Standing at the plate bothers me, I figured he'd change after his "different" off-season.

@Steven Roth....ditto. But if today...as if one day ever is...a sign of things to come...Manny could be in for a big rebound year as I think many of us have predicted.
