3/26: Cancer Boy!?

Prev. Gm:

Boston Red Sox (1-0) @ Oakland Athletics (0-1)

Jon Lester (0-0, -.--) @ Rich Harden (0-0, -.--)

6:05 AM EDT | Tokyo Dome (Tokyo, Japan)

TV: NESN, ESPN2 | RADIO: WEEEI 850, WROL 950, XM 177

GAME NOTES: Too much for my liking have I seen Yankee fans refer to Jon Lester as "Cancer Boy." There was even one time early last year where a Yankee commenter wrote in (the comment was deleted by a writer over there) on The Bronx Block alleging that Lester 'faked' his cancer. Well, let's see the career 9-2 lefty with a World Series clinching game win under his belt fake his way through a whole season. He's got his strength back, he's filled out, and he's ready to realize his potential. One day soon he won't be Cancer Boy. He'll be Cy Young Winner.

Another early morning...no chat today? lol...Harden looked good in the first. Is every start he has an audition for another team?

I was looking forward to a chat as well, but after seeing how dominant Harden has been, its probably a good thing we didn't get one ...

I'm a big Sox fan, but I don't see Lester as "Cy Young Winner" anytime soon with that performance.

Nevertheless, it's still the beginning of the year and I'm happy with .500.

Our offense certainly knows how to hit and Manny, well he's just being Manny which is good. Methinks there needs to be a coordinated effort with our offense on figuring these pitchers out. So far I'd have to say our biggest need for improvement lies in the starting bullpen. I'm sure it'll calm down as the games go on but it's going to be a rough March/April given who we're playing.

Harden starts off big again. Wish we had gotten him and Street while their health were still questions. BB will want two Santanas now, but he will be foolish to trade either, as they will make 2008 a happier time for A's fans.

Jon Lester, the Pen and Offense will be fine. Despite these two games that count, it is still S.T. after a long season, and full of anomolies . . . except for Moss and Manny.

Oh well, we're 1-1.

Two good things: Aardsma looked great in relief, and Manny still looks locked-in (and probably wishing there weren't 6 days until the next game).

Of course, we're going to need Lester pitching a lot better than that, or we're in some trouble.

Lester will probably never win a Cy Young, Colin, but I do think he'll end up being at the very least a strong No. 3.

Oh absolutely. Lester is a good pitcher, but like Matsuzaka, Wake, Buchholz, and a couple of the other Sox pitchers barring Beckett, they need to learn stability and control because last year it was many a time that run support bailed them out.

Like the top article said, the Sox needs some serious rest before taking on what should be a challenging April. I give credit to Francona for being cautious and resting those that are possibly injured. Better they have our big guns for the later fights than try and bust out of the gate early and have us fall flat on their asses.
