Varitek pinch hit hero, rookie Lowrie shines in debut
Jason Varitek had a day off today with Tim Wakefield getting the nod, but when called upon in the top of the ninth to pinch hit for starting catcher Kevin Cash, Varitek delivered a solo-homerun to put Boston up 4-3 and eventually won the game 5-3.
Hideki Okajma got the save in the bottom of the ninth, his first this season, and the Boston Red Sox improved to 9-6.
Jed Lowrie who is filling in for injured third baseman Mike Lowell had quite a career debut for the Sox. Lowrie put Boston ahead in the top of the seventh inning on a two RBI single and ended the night going 3-4 with three runs batted in.

That home run was simply just huge. After last night's come from behind win and sitting on the bench all night long Tek deserves the honor here providing the clutch hit when Boston needed it most.
Preview of the Next Game: Sox/Yanks
The pitching is keeping Boston in the game and the offense is getting big hits right now. Can the trend continue against the Yankees in this next series? Well, Boston is flying high right now after a sweep of the Indians in two come from behind wins so the Sox have momentum right now. Let us hope they keep it going.

hey ... the Sox finally have a winning streak longer than their 3 game losing sweep in Toronto. Kudos.
4 in a row with Buchholz and Wang going again tomorrow night.

If only someone, *someone* had suggested Lowrie starting at third instead of re-signing Lowell. Man, it was all so clear.

Just a few months ago comments on this site argued that V-Tek was done, and that Lowrie was OK for 2b, but didn't have the arm for SS. This should have been Tek's 4th HR. Lowrie looks good at 3b, so when the time comes to step into SS, this will be a good thing.
Sean, you gotta be as happy about Julian and Coco as am about Jacoby and Aardsma. Was anyone else surprised to see Coco+Julio+Jacoby+Jed all playing at the same time: past, present and future all at once.
And how about Brown's HR yesterday and Kottaras two "tape measure" HR's tonite, plus Kielty, Moss, Carter tearing it up, and good jobs by Pauley, Zinc, Gronk. Future's looking very good!

Lowrie looks like a left-handed Hanley Ramairez at the plate...just his stance and the fact that you would not think short-stop looking at him (although both are marginal at the position and that may explain it). He is a tremendous value at his natural 2b position...with all the weak hitting second baseman in baseball and the fact that there is not exactly a plethera of elite prospects at the position (Matt Antonelli is the only one that comes to mind) I imagine he has got to have a great deal of value to other teams.

I forgot about that, he is good at it too. I was watching the Bruins last night for the most part and just caught one at bat from the left side...his stance looked like Hanley's in a mirror.
