5/1: More Fenway Magic?
Prev. Gm:![]() |
Toronto Blue Jays (11-17) @ Boston Red Sox (17-12) |
GAME NOTES: Tim Wakefield and the Red Sox look to continue the magical ride the Red Sox have been on in Fenway Park where it seems like every game comes down to the wire with the last two ending in walk off wins. A.J. Burnett takes the hill for the Jays who hope to avoid having the favor of a sweep returned by the Red Sox after having swept them in Toronto earlier this season. Can the Red Sox bats wake up? Will Tim Wakefield continue this stellar turn round the rotation?

C’mon, still no Drew? I’m a Drew fan, but come on, play through it.

I dunno if it’s just me but the font on today’s game post is huge … and bold … I know it’s been an exciting couple of games but that might be a little overkill eh?

For whatever reason it appears it was the chat that was causing the issues….have disabled for now… Go Sox!

in the name of allah what’s wrong with offense, even from here ( Tunisia, north africa), I can smell that it stinks!!!

This is ridiculous….we need to get some hits!

These guys do know they’re allowed to score in innings other than the ninth, right?

I remember a time - not so long ago - when the Red Sox used to score runs, and Wakefield didn’t suck so much. Good times.

Wake’s been the usual Wake tonight … 7 innings … gave up a few runs but not too bad … it doesn’t matter what your pitching is doing though if you can’t score any runs … this is just stupid

I agree that the batters need to score, but Wake’s been the usual Wake all right: a steaming pile of suck. If not for Rios flying out to Manny in the fourth (after #49 walked the bases full) and Eckstein running like an idiot in the fifth, this game could easily be 8-0 Jays.
Wakefield: 7IP, 6H, 4BB, 2HBP, 2SB, 1PB, and by some miracle, only 3ER. That’s a WHIP of 1.7 if you count the HBPs as BBs. He sucks. It’s glue factory time. (And he can take Timlin with him.)

You know, I’m going to be interested to see if the Sox pick up his club option. If he ends the year around his norms of the last several years, it’s a no-brainer. But even though he wants to keep pitching, if he sags, I wonder if we could induce him to retire. It’s way too early to think about that, though. The fact remains: 7 IP, 3 ER.
It’s our offense that’s losing this game.

Evan,
It’s semantics, but the offense can’t lose a game. That’s why Wakefield gets his first (really? only his first? There will be many, many more) L of the year.
7IP, 3ER, true; but it’s the freaking Jays, who came in 6 games under .500., hitting a collective .250, and dead last in the AL in SLG. Other facts: Wakefield’s marginal performance today lowered his season ERA, and in the two wins he’s got this season, the Sox scored a total of 18 runs.
Yes, no pitcher can win if his team doesn’t score, but I’ve long believed that ‘Timmay being Timmay’ can also take the wind right out of the offense’s sails. Why grit out some runs when you know he can give it all right back with a combination of BBs, HBPs, PBs and moon shots?
Just for the record, I am not biased against Wakefield personally; I hate all knuckleballers. I hated Charlie Hough, I hated Tom Candiotti, and I’m not old enough to remember him, but I would have hated Hoyt Wilhelm, too.
My fourth happiest day as a Sox fan (Top three: 2004 WS game 4, 2004 ALCS game 7 & 2007 WS game 4, in that order) will be when Wakefield announces his retirement. If he’s serious about sticking around until he passes Cy and Whatsisname with 195 wins (25 to go, Tim!), that day won’t come around until about 2016.

Yeah I agree Wakefield hasn’t been as good as usual lately … he’s well-known for showing up some days and not showing up others … lately he hasn’t been showing up at all
But I just figured I’d point out that, despite perpetually walking on thin ice, he does keep us in games … as Evan said, it’s our offense that lost us this game
I’m starting to get a little concerned … what happened to all those come from behind wins during the streak? This is like a different team that last few nights
May 1st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Wakefield has 4.06 era, that’s amazing for him, what do you want him to do? he is what he is and that is a 4th starter that will give you innings and keep your team in the game, every team would die to have a guy like Timmy, the offense takes the blame for this lose.

This is getting painful to watch! Offense o’ offense, where art thou o’ offense?
May 2nd, 2008 at 12:52 am
Agreed about the value of Wake. And what other kind of pitcher can keep you on the edge of your seat, like watchng a Hitchock movie. I saw Wilhelm, and his games were just as interesting.
This week we got dominance from Daisuke, Lester, Becket and Buckholz. We still lost two of those games for lack of offense. Tonite we got typical Wake, and lack of offense.
I still see him in the Pen, as the swingman, when Colon comes up, for another 5 years or more.

Wake doesn’t need to be an ace. He’s good enough to keep the team in games and for what he’s getting paid that is more than enough.

I knew critcizing Saint Tim would be an unpopular move, but I really had to vent. (Every fifth day, it seems…) Sorry to burden you all with my rant. I just hate knuckleballers - their success is more tied to relative humidity, prevailing winds and random chance than to any actual skills they posess, and to me, that’s not pitching.
And my heart can’t take much more of this. The high-wire, thin-ice, Hitchcock-movie, edge-of-my seat aspect of watching Wakefield pitch is wearing thin. I want to see games that are won or lost based on how well the pitcher pitched, not on what the ball did on its own after the pitcher let it go.
However, those of you who point out that #49 has an ERA around 4.00 are right; I should be more appreciative, and I will try.
Go Sox.
