POLL: Justin Masterson’s role

What should the plan be for Justin Masterson?

  • See you in September to get a few innings in preparation for 2009.

    31% of all votes

  • Plug him in only in desperation, don’t rush him.

    28% of all votes

  • Up and down all year plugging starting holes when need be, shut down after September

    23% of all votes

  • Look to him as a potential starter/reliever for the entire year should need be.

    18% of all votes

This was actually a pretty close vote. I do agree with the consensus. With Bartolo Colon and Curt Schilling due back soon plus the ability of Julian Tavarez to start in a pinch, I don’t think we’ll need to lean on Masterson for the remainder of the year, but he should get an opportunity to start next year.

I do think we’ll see him in September…much like Clay last year.

    Viva la Masterson 2009!!!!

I’m not sure where Masterson fits in the rotation next year.

    Beckett
    Matsuzaka
    Lester
    Buchholz
    Wakefield

We either need to entice Wakefield to retire (and why do that if you can count on him for 200, 4.50 each year?) or move him to the pen (eh…).

Masterson best profiles as a reliever, anyways, so we might stick him in the bullpen in place of Mike Timlin?

It’s a nice problem to have!

The way our pen has I say let him start at Portland/Pawtucket until early August to get some innings and then transition him to the pen for a late August (if our pen still sucks), or early September call-up (when rosters expand). Bring him back as a starter next year…even if he is our #6 he will likely get 20 starts with attrition/injuries.

Masterson, with his sinkerball style and ability to throw strikes, seems to be a good fit to take over the 7th/8th inning role next season. He projects long-term as a reliever. One person who attended Masterson’s last start at Portland on SoSH remarked he became visibly fatigued after five innings of work.

Is this fatigue the norm, or due to something else.

Masterson looks like a swingman/bridge man at this point, but he’s still really young. You could see him tire in his start at Fenway as well; the velocity on the sinker plummeted from the end of the 4th inning on.

I know he’s a big guy, but why can’t he condition himself better, so that he can go 7 innings?
