Beckett the Show Stopper
If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
There is a reason you are called an ace, a number one starter, a show stopper, the make it stop bleeding guy, etc. Josh Beckett went even further tonight striking out Curtis Granderson four times (eight total), and only gave up one run to the best offense in the league (on paper that is).
Kevin Youkilis smacked his seventh homerun of the season off of the helpless “ace” Justin Verlander as Boston triumphed 5-1. Verlander suffered his sixth loss of the season while Beckett achieved a milestone by striking out Brandon Inge for 1,000 strikeouts in his career.
Star of the Game: You would be an idiot if:
You did not think it was Beckett. Pitching seven innings saves the bullpen. Pitching seven innings allowing only one run to score helps Boston win the game. Not only did he only allow one run, but he also just simply dominated Detroit in tonight’s contest.
Preview of Next Game: at Minnesota
Jon Lester, we can all agree, needs to be more consistent. Let’s see how he follows up his last performance against Boof Bonser and the Twins. Bonser has been pretty good this season so expect a good pitching matchup tomorrow.

7 innings … 1 run … 8 Ks … Thank you Mr. Beckett for making last night go away
I know Lugo sucks (understatement) … and I know Hanley is awesome (another understatement) … but I am SO glad Beckett is our ace

SAM - I cannot agree more.

I wonder if we can afford to bring Hanley home some day.
Probably not, but we can dream.
Julian and Julio would probably net us a couple or three solid prospects to reload our upwardly mobile farm system.
In the meantime, Lowrie, mentored by Cora (in the same way Alex mentored Pedroia last year), can give us solid defense with range the ONLY question (but look what Dustin is doing), and a probable +/-.300BA with high OBP and growing power in the 9th hole in front of Jacoby and Dustin. Talk about setting the table, keeping rallies going, making our batting order that much stronger, and restoring the integrity of this otherwise gold glove infield.

and all is right with the world again…

Gerry,
It COULD be possible… Hanley’s hitting arb this year… but it’d cost us an arm and leg… something like Masterson, Bowden, Lowrie, Kalish, Wagner…

I would be happy with Lowrie at SS, starting today, especially with Diaz and others percolating upwards and Lowrie’s apparant skil at 3b. But Hanley would do at Fenway what a Manny or A-Rod can do . . . change any game, on a daily basis.
For Hanley those trade choices would be fine. Our pitching would allow us to trade a Masterson or Bowden, and my guy Lowrie would have no future with Hanley at SS. With our OF so well stocked, even Kalish or Reddick at their best might not get a break. Wagner? Depends on the draft (go for Posey, whatever it takes) and how Cash, Kottaras, Brown look at the end of the year.
Hanley would be worth this trade. Imagine even a couple of years of Hanley, Papi, Manny, Lowell, Youk, Drew, set up by Jacoby and Dustin. Makes it difficult to breath.

I can’t imagine Hanley being a shortstop much longer, and just think how much it would sting if we “got him back” and he regressed significantly. Huge bad pr.

OK, Hanley won’t regress. He is going to be a top three player in the league in the next two years.

I agree he will continue to be a top three player for the next two years, and probably a lot longer. I was just saying that given he will require loads of prospects and a staggering contract to hold on to, one of the considerations the front office will have to think about is how bad they will look if he tanks (doubtful) or injured (unpredictable). He has baggage that could make the FO look really really good, or turn into absolute tragedy for them compared with other players, even if very few are of his caliber.
