Papelbon blows game
Can’t blame this one on Julio Lugo.
Up 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth the Boston Red Sox went to star closer Jonathan Papelbon and he did not close the door giving up two runs on a Mike Lamb single as the Minnesota Twins took game one of the series 7-6.
Boston came back in the game in the fifth inning scoring four runs on a Mike Lowell two-RBI double, a Kevin Youkilis ground out to second, and Lowell later scored on a wild pitch.
Goat of the Game: Paps
Two earned runs and a walk and his second blown save of the season for Papelbon gives him the goat of the game.
Preview of Next Game: Go get em Dice-K
After suffering a tough loss in the final frame Daisuke Matsuzaka has to have a Josh Beckett pitching performance of two days ago.

This may sound very silly, but perhaps it might’ve been a decent idea to keep Okajima in for the ninth since he shut down the Twins offense for two innings?
Sorry Papelbon, I love ya and all, but until you get rid of that Lugo taint…I’m going to have to get nervous now every time you get on the mound. You’re still awesome, but you’re making me worry.

didn’t we just play this game two days ago??? that was just BIZARRE the way it played out. of course, no loss is complete without a timely Lugo error (even if it came early).

ROTOWORLD:
Couldn’t agree more. This one is on Paps.

Strange things are going on in Red Sox Nation as of late … who was that guy out on the mound for us tonight?
Let’s not get too worried though … This is still a good team and I’m assuming (and hoping) this is just a rough patch in the road for Paps and for this team
It is one bad ass rough patch though … tonight hurt … and Beckett isn’t pitching tommorrow … damn … Cmon Sox!

Good ballgame tonight.
I did not think the Twins had it in them to beat Papelbon. The Twins tend to struggle against good closers so this was surprising.
Lot of runs scored tonight.
An opposing team can never relax against the Red Sox. They got some lineup. Youkilis is so tough to get out.
Neither starters were great tonight, but I expect good starting pitching in this series.

So much for the Hanley Ramirez talk. It was fun while it lasted but it looks like he is about to sign a 6 yr deal with Fla.

A 6 year deal. Why? Get the hell out of there Hanley! NOW!

[…] Jones made a 4-run lead look very surmountable, but the winning run was left on first base as Shelley Duncan hit a ball hard but at Granderson. All I can say about Jones is that if he’s going to pitch crappy, better to do it with a 4 run cushion than a 1 run one. But yes, he will blow some saves, as do all closers. […]

Shawn,
That’s right, According to the Sun Sentinel the Marlins are on the verge of signing Hanley Ramirez to a 6 year, $70mil extension.
I am ’bout to throw up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just a thought:
If the D’backs are renogatiating a new contract with brandon webb because he’s underpaid, why the giants can’t do the same with Barry Zito for the opposite reasons or the Red Sox with f****-ing Julio Lugo???
Yeah, I guess The MLBPA won’t never let this happen!!

I suspect FO will want Julio to take a day or two off when Cora returns, maybe even until Alex’s bat cools down. But then it would be back to Julio, who will hit .280, steal some bases, and make a few errors, one of which may cost us another game. This is not a totally bad thing, as it will give Lowrie daily games in Pawtucket to get back in his hitting groove, at SS. When the FO finally gives up, Lowrie will be ready to perform full time at Fenway, with Cora as mentor.

RADIOHIX - I ask why? Again. Is it really about the money with all these players?
Seriously.
