POLL: What to do with Lugo

Well, on the heels of a disastrous week for Julio Lugo, the outcome isn’t too surprising:

What should we do with Julio Lugo?

  • Ride the pine! Embrace Lowrie!

    40% of all votes

  • Play him all of 2008 and then replace him with Jed Lowrie

    26% of all votes

  • Start him until we trade him this year.

    23% of all votes

  • Keep playing him until his contract runs out.

    7% of all votes

  • Play him all of 2008 and then replace him with someone outside the org.

    3% of all votes

I think we should start him until we are absolutely forced to bench him. As research on Fire Brand has shown, Lugo isn’t exactly the worst shortstop in baseball. There aren’t any clear upgrades on the horizon out of the organization, so our best bet is to see if Jed Lowrie can fill that position long term. This next poll was brought to you from Jc because he won a trivia question. Check it out on the right…

Cora could bat .700 the rest of the year….ride the hot bat ;)

“Lugo isn’t exactly the worst shortstop in baseball.”

Offensively, that’s true, but defensively, he’s, well, offensive. His 11 errors and .917 FPCT makes him the worst regular shortstop in either league by a wide margin. The four guys with worse FPCT at SS have started a combined 8 games at the position.

Maybe his concussion has re-aligned his synapses, but I wouldn’t count on it. A Cora/Lowrie platoon looks good to me, and maybe Theo can trade him away before he reduces his value even further.
