Clay Buchholz to DL
The Red Sox placed Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL with a broken fingernail. He will (obviously) miss his start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, and there's no word who will replace him. This would have been where it would be nice to have Julian Tavarez, no? I wonder if the finger is prohibitive enough to DL him or they just want to give him a mental break.
If the Red Sox opt to hold David Pauley or Justin Masterson back from his upcoming start, one of the two could be called up.
Outfielder Jonathan Van Every has been called up to take Buchholz's spot and provide outfield depth what with J.D. Drew and Coco Crisp not in top shape. Van Every had five homers and four steals to go along with a .278/.357/.461 line this season, a similar line to his career numbers. No need to worry about how the Red Sox will make room for Bartolo Colon out of the gate. A broken fingernail....Uh, right....wink, wink...
Theo has mastered the art of DL usage for roster flexibility. I'm surprised that Julio Lugo's headache didn't land him on the DL to keep Lowrie around a bit longer.
Outfielder Jonathan Van Every will be called up to replace Buchholz on the roster as insurance in the outfield while J.D. Drew recovers from his strained left wrist. Look for Colon to take this spot as the next turn round the rotation comes his way.

I'm not seeing Colon making the start against the Brewers Sunday, but next turn around is definitely plausible.

I wonder if with the day off they can outright skip Buchholz's next start and hit Colon up the next turn through...

That's possible. If not, it won't be Masterson b/c he's off schedule and has been struggling....and Bowden isn't ready. Snyder left with a groin injury last night. Tejera??

I was thinking the same thing, Sean. The Babe kept us behind the Yankees. Will this curse keep us behind the Rays? Will it go away if he comes back through Pawtucket like Corey and Snyder? If we hire him as a coach???
It is good for Clay Buchholz and the future of the Sox rotation, for him to take time off right now. Hopefully he will spend a few turns in AAA to get his groove and confidence back, not to mention his fingernail. We need him this year and beyond. Pauley and Hansack are both back on track, and would be solid 5th men until Colon makes his debut. I wish Theo had let Buchholz finish his schooling at Pawtucket in April. When he, Hughes and Kennedy return, they will be consistently better pitchers.
Fortunately, the pitching staff all had good outings, as well as some bad ones, on this awful road trip. This weekend at home will cure the curse.
