5/17: Game 2 - Let’s play two…

Prev. Gm:

Milwaukee Brewers (20-22) @ Boston Red Sox (25-19)
Dave Bush (1-4, 6.06) @ Tim Wakefield (3-2, 4.25)

8:35 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES:

The Sox get off the snide with a win in game one of the doubleheader. Tim Wakefield and the Red Sox go Bush-whacking tonight. With Okajima out and the “guns” in the pen used in game 1, let’s hope Dave Bush’s 6.06 ERA is a harbinger of an offensive display to come. A win puts the Red Sox back in a tie for the A.L. East with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ladies and gents…it seems Tim Wakefield doesn’t feel like fucking around tonight.

    Lowell = clutch w/doubles

bumping this comment re: Pedroia from the end of last game’s thread:

@jc…he is swinging at less balls out of the strike zone than he did last year….he is swinging at about 1% more overall pitches than last year…

    http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8370&position=2B

now…maybe he is in a little slump…but plate discipline ain’t the problem

  5. Tim Daloisio says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

plate discipline stats are at the bottom of that page…

  6. Jc says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

he is not taking walks, his BB% this season is 5.3% down from last year 8.3%, if that’s not plate discipline i don’t know what that is.

  7. Colin says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

    Lowell = love

  8. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

he’s not taking as many walks, but he’s leading the league in hits

  9. Jc says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

*lack of plate discipline i mean.

  10. Jc says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

hits are overrated, he is making more outs than last year, his job is to get on base in front of Ortiz and Manny.

  11. Jc says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

    man i hate those bunts.

  12. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

What’s the point of bunting with a four run lead and a guy on 2nd who scores on any base hit to the outfield?

Even if Papi had gotten him home, that strategy made no sense whatsoever.

  13. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

    Craig Hansen officially sucks

  14. Sean O says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Wow, we really really suck at baseball.

  15. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

So does our defense — that’s what started it.

  16. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

This one’s really turning into a clinic on defense, ain’t it?

  17. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

yeah I was about to say that about the defense too, but it can’t be a coincidence that every time Hansen is out there the other team scores 7+ eras don’t happen by accident

  18. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Milwaukee might be the worst defensive team that I’ve ever seen

  19. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

    Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk

  20. Colin says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Now, now guys…it’d be foolhardy to automatically say we suck at baseball.

Our middle relief sucks at baseball, but playing like this with a double-header and with Ortiz slamming, Youk getting us in the lead again, and Lowell proving why re-signing him was a smart move shows we don’t suck. Think abou it. We win this game and we’re back on top.

Now the Yankees on the other hand…well it’s a long way down.

  21. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Is this actually a big league game? Seven errors? WTF?

  22. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    really… unbelievable

  23. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

    and the sucking resumes

  24. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    This is a horror show. I can’t look…

  25. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

    OK…there’s some D!

    Very nice 4-6-3 there.

  26. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

    perhaps I spoke too soon

  27. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Thank you, Pedroia! Now, if only the Brewers would put in Gagne…

  28. Colin says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Didn’t you hear? Gagne lost his role as closer. Turns out Milwaukee learned the hard way just like we did.

  29. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I heard - I was hoping he’d pitch the eighth so we could tack on a dozen runs. He may not be the closer anymore, but he is still on the roster for some unknown reason.

  30. Steven Roth says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Oh my gawd, are we really using Timlin as our closer?? We can forget about walking away with a doubleheader sweep!

  31. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Speaking of being on the roster for some unknown reason, here’s Mike Timlin. Darn.

  32. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

wow we’re really daring milwaukee to win this one

  33. Steven Roth says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

2 outs, cross your fingers guys

  34. Steven Roth says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Wow he pulled it off…huh. Hope he decides to retire on this high note and save us all grief the rest of the season.

  35. Steven Roth says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

    Mike Lowell > Sean O

  36. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

    One defibrillator over here, please.

  37. Bob says:

    May 17th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

booya that just happened. Somehow pulled out a win with Aardsma, Hansen, Lopez, and Timlin all pitching in the same game. Have to feel good about this one.

  38. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 12:01 am

That was all kinds of ugly, but hey, it’s a W.

  39. Tessie's Dad says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 12:10 am

That’s right, Daniel. A one-run win beats all hell out of a one-run loss.

  40. Sam says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 1:09 am

double headers are crazy … you never know what is gonna happen … normal strategy goes out the window lol … but they’re awesome … especially when you sweep it :)

  41. gerry says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 2:00 am

First place again. Home for 5 more days. Daisuke and Wake looked the way the were supposed to. Another new AAA pitcher coming up, and maybe Colon, for an exciting week. Timlin seems done with S.T. More home cookin = a chance to finally get all the pieces together for the rest of the year. We’ll be fine from here on.

  42. Daniel Rathman says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 2:10 am

I find it somewhat funny that we win when we go up 4-0, but cave disastrously when we’re up 3-0. That’s twice today.

But my evening got even better about an hour after the game when I backed into a ticket to next Friday’s Sox/A’s game in Oakland. Beckett vs. Harden. Can’t wait. (Don’t get hurt tomorrow, Josh. Just don’t. K?)

  43. gerry says:

    May 18th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Let’s hope they are both healthy, and then Paps vs. Street to close, just to see what we missed. That would be a real show. Can you even imagine all 4 of them on the same team for the next 5+ years? I repeat, no, actually, I perserverate, that Street and Harden have long been the answers to Gagne and Santana. It is so obvious. But with the A’s actually contending, they are no doubt off the market, or suddenly at a premium.
