5/19: Give ‘em a Royal Welcome…

Prev. Gm:

Kansas City Royals (21-22) @ Boston Red Sox (27-19)
Luke Hochevar (3-2, 3.94) @ Jon Lester (2-2, 3.95)

7:05 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
TV: NESN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES:

The Kansas City Royals come to town for a four game set looking to climb over the .500 mark. Now that’s just not something that the Red Sox can let happen. I’ll leave the Game Notes with a few pre-game questions for you: (1) Will David Ortiz continue to dominate the opposition? (2) Can the Red Sox overcome the “first time seeing a good young pitcher” jinx that seems to have haunted them over the past few years? (3) Will Manny Ramirez creep closer to 500 home runs?

The old chat room link seems to have some issues…in the meantime you can chat in our Meebo room here. Just type your first message and it will prompt you for an alias.

If we’re going to keep Lugo in the lineup, and it certainly seems like we’re stuck with him, can Tito at least super-glue the bat to his shoulder when he goes to the plate with a runner on first and less than two out?

Congratulations Jon! Couldn’t have happened to a better human being. I’m even happier on this one than on Bucholz’s last year. I’ve got goosebumps right now.

and I almost asked if Jon Lester would pitch a no-no in the game notes…should have followed my instincts

Amazing. Anyone who has watched him pitch since spring training should not be surprised based on his stuff. His velocity has improved vastly with is health and weight, his cutter and curve can both be plus pitches as well. His fastball was knee high all night and only was elevated by design.

Sean, your namesake is the first left handed pitcher in 52 years to pitch a no hitter, and that was Mel Parnell. You did it, Sean. Keep up the good work. I think Jon Lester needs an appropriate nickname . . . like Big Jon. “Big Jon of the No No”. Scare the opposition with it. What a battle this 24 year old has had during the past 3 years. Awesome pitching. Awesome story. Awesome individual. Did he just go from a possible 3 to a possible 2+? No doubt in my mind.

JON LESTAH =) What can’t this kid do? First he beats cancer, then he wins the deciding game in the ‘07 WS, then he throws a NO-NO!!

    Congrats Jon, you’ve earned it.

This one may be more impressive than Buchholz’s especially since Lester had only 2 walks as opposed to Buch’s 5.

Congratulations Jon! This couldn’t happen to a better human being. The smile hasn’t left my face all night.

One other thing to note. This is now the fourth no-hitter that Varitek has caught. I was doing a little snooping online and it seems like he’s now caught more no-hitters than any catcher in history. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but if this is the case I don’t see it as a coincidence. This should only add to Tek’s credentials as one of the best catchers in baseball.

Congratulations Jon! Couldn’t have happened to a better human being. I haven’t stopped smiling all evening.

Another thing to note, this is Tek’s fourth career caught no-hitter. I was doing a little snooping and it seems that this makes him the all time leader in this category. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this says a lot about Tek and the fact that he’s one of the best catchers at calling a game in history. A great night to be a Sox fan!

LESTER!!!! WHAT!?! Are you kidding? I just got in and I had to like triple check espn … I couldn’t believe it … words cannot describe how awesome that is for the kid and for the entire ballclub right now

    Awesome.

    May 19th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Oh and btw … Tek has called not 1 … not 2 … not 3 … but FOUR freaking no hitters … the man is brilliant behind the plate … respect the Captain

Unbelievable. There will be more thoughts tomorrow, many many more thoughts, but for tonight, sweet mother of god.

    Wow wow wow wow.
