Four run fifth inning fuels Sox
Bartolo Colon only needed 5 innings of work to earn his first win with the Boston Red Sox as Jason Varitek led a four run offensive spurt in the fifth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3.  Boston's sixth straight win puts them 2 games ahead of second place Tampa Bay in the A.L. East.
Colon gave up six hits, two earned runs, two walks, but struck out four in his first major league start since having elbow problems last season.
Jacoby Ellsbury led off the game with a homerun into the bullpen, his fourth homerun, and also collected three hits, scored three times, and walked once in Boston's sixth straight win.
Star of the Game: Colon
I understand Jacoby had a big night, but while sitting in the stands for this one, Bleacher section 38, row 26, seat 19, I could only think about how if Colon has three or four more quality starts like this how he could be incredibly influential down the stretch in a playoff run especially when the roster moves to 40 men.  Colon's 5 innings were good enough for a win, but most importantly it looked as if he had some confidence back and was certainly throwing hard as well.  So, hard Colon hit 94 on the gun in the game.
Preview of Next Game: Bannister vs Matsuzaka
This SHOULD be a good pitchers duel as Bannister has some solid stuff and Daisuke Matsuzaka is 7-0: enough said!
P.S. I think as we have been staying with youtube videos until the starting pitcher loses we should stay with the eating contest one and Janet gets to come back tomorrow.
Side note:  Meeting people from Nebraska at tonight's game in the bleachers was certainly interesting.  They are still hanging onto Eric Crouch's Heisman Trophy!  STILL!

While BC's successful return adds wins and unimaginable depth to our rotation, I think we can also be happy with the trends of other players:
Jacoby's 4thHR, and raising his average to .290. I think we all knew he would be an impact player on the bases and in the field, but wondered if he would be a .300 hitter with high OPS or hit for power. Even as he figures out the MLB, he is edging back to .300 and is on pace to hit a dozen HR as a rookie, and promise of more as he matures.
The Captain's bat. Jason is a hitter again, and is trending towards earning an All-Star berth.
Coco Crisp seems to be thriving in this 4-man OF . . . with an offense as strong as his D, and inspired base running.
This homestand seems to have gotten our Bullpen back on its feet.
