FIGHT!
Coco Crisp charged the mound after James Shields threw at Coco, and Crisp avoided a powerful right hand from Shields that would have gotten approval from Muhammad Ali himself and got in a punch before Shields, Dioner Navarro and others overwhelmed Crisp and slammed him to the ground, raining punches on him.
Crisp and Shields were immediately ejected. This comes on the heels of a game last night where in the fourth inning, Coco stole second but shortstop Jason Bartlett blocked the bag with his knee, which sprained Coco's finger. Later in the game, Coco took out Akinori Iwamura on a force play for revenge.
It's 4-1 Boston in the bottom second. Manny hit a three-run bomb to kick the game off before the melee in the second. Chris Carter replaced Coco, with Jacoby Ellsbury shifting to center and Carter in left. It is Carter's major league debut. He pinch-ran for Coco and scored his first major league run without getting an at-bat.
***UPDATE*** Jacoby Ellsbury made a sensational catch but caught his wrist on the ground, so he's coming out of the game. J.D. Drew is moving to centerfield and Kevin Youkilis will head to right.

Gomes was ejected, too.
A lack of level-headed maturity could be the undoing of the Ray's otherwise impressive rotation.
Welcome to Fenway, Carter.

Good for the Rays!! Even if your team is struggling and on the verge of getting swept it is always a good idea to leave the other team with a few black eyes!! Leave them something to remember you by!!

Ok, just say the replay on Youtube...Question: why does Crisp throw off his helmet before charging the pitcher. If I'm on my way to a fight I keep the armor on- that's just me I guess.

And now Manny has a problem with Youk!?
Remy and Don's fake fight was hilarious, though.

*meant to post this here:
Funny thing is … have a friend in the Rays coverage area and I was told they cannot stop talking about the fight and the Lester pitch behind Aybar. Funny how NESN just goes on with the game and the Rays broadcast missed two outs and has replayed the fight at least three times by now.
Shows what organization has arrived and what organization is trying to.
Also, Gomes you are a scumbag. Any baseball player knows that that is bush league.

Re: Jacoby the globe says x-rays were negative for a break and he would be re-evaluated tomorrow.
Manny went at Youk in the dugout. Youk looked sincerely confused as to what was going on. No punches thrown, but looked like a mad Manny.

wtf is Lester doing on the mound with a 6 run lead and a pitch count over 100???

Youk probably called out Manny for hurting the team by not playing left field tonight. Manny's got a "hammy" problem but me thinks he is faking that so he can DH fulltime with Papi on the DL. If Manny played left tonight, Youk wouldn't have to be standing out there in right where he's never played before. That's just what I'm thinking though.

haha just saw the youtube video of the coco charghing the mound tonight...he got gangbanged after punching Shields. Why wasn't there any Sox players there to get his back?

Smart move by the sox players to just pull guys off instead of punching, Tampa is going to lose a lot more players to suspension than Boston

the only concern that I have about this team now is Pedroia BA, his bat has not been cold, it's frozen!!!
Since the 1st OAK game of the road trip he's been hitting .130!!!!
his glove is still hot though.

Jesus...Gomes was throwing bombs at Coco. Next time we play the Rays, Beckett needs to throw some heaters at his hip and dare him to come after him.

I respect that he didn't throw at his head, but he did throw at his crotch. Plunk him in the ribs or back, stay away from the testicles.
I want to see Colon v. Gomes personally. Let's leave front end starters out of this.

haha MR, that'd be great if Colon plunked Gomes and they both went at it UFC-style.
I only mentioned Beckett in the above messages because who in their right mind would charge the mound and take on a big texan son a of bitch!

I didn't get a clear shot at the name, but someone took a couple of hard punches at Coco's kidneys while he was being held down. As I was blacked out again on NESN, I finally saw the game on F'NFSNFlorida. The Rays announcers played the fight twice an inning for the rest of the game, tch, tching all the way, and had a feature on it after the game, proudly stating that they may have been swept but that this will bring the team together. They also claim that 3rd base coach Hale (deliberately) put a necklock on Shields and threw him to the ground on his pitching shoulder. I like the Rays, and the announcers are usually pretty objective and professional, but don't like what I have been seeing tonite. Also claiming that, since Coco told the Rays if you are going to get revenge, get it on me, not my team mates . . . so he should have taken the pitch on his thigh and not involved his team mates.
On the other hand, Julio is not only hitting, but making some beautiful plays like that barehand. It may be time to start loving Julio . . . and Lester, Timlin, Aardsma, and way to go Carter, 2 for 3 first game. He's a hitter.
The Rays announcers talked at length about the balance and depth of this Sox team, and we saw it tonite again.

Gerry,
I will never, ever like Lugo, even if he hits back-to-back grand slams in game 7 of the world series .... ok may be I'll like him then!

I like Lugo as much as anyone on the team. That's what being a fan is about for me. I just want the guy to perform or at the least look like he takes the field ready to do that. Thankfully he has lately. Thank you Mr. Lugo.

Okay, I've replayed the fight on MLB.com a bunch of times...so...
A. Coco gets plunked, charges mound
B. Shields winds up, tosses punch, misses
C. Coco dodges, makes a slight contact
D. Navarro grabs Coco by the neck from behind in an attempt to wrestle him to the ground
E. During D, Shields throws a couple of more punches at Coco's head
F. Coco is tossed to the ground and Gomes, the DH, comes rushing from the dugout and pounds Coco with his fist a couple of times.
G. Iwamura (one of the buzz players) comes in from 2nd and throws in one punch before being overwhelmed by the situation
H. Crawford uses his speed to run in from CF, slides in, and immediately punches Coco in the back.
So it seems to me that four Tampa Bay players threw punches in this massacre. That pile even rolled over a couple of times before all the players could be pulled off/out.

Lily - please don't yell in all caps.
looked like Jacoby tried in vain to pull someone off of Coco by tugging at his shirt. adorable, but ineffective, like he wanted to do something without throwing any punches.
dang, I miss one game to have dinner with friends and everyone's throwing fisticuffs!
