6/25: Battle Of Elders

Prev. Gm:

Arizona Diamondbacks (40-38) @ Boston Red Sox (48-32)

Randy Johnson (4-5, 5.09) @ Tim Wakefield (4-5, 4.17)

7:05 PM EDT | Fenway Park (Boston, MA)

TV: NESN/ESPN RADIO: WRKO 680, SBN 1150

GAME NOTES: The Red Sox and D'Backs finish off a fiercely contested three-game set at the Fens with Randy Johnson taking on Tim Wakefield, two pitchers with extensive resumes and a combined age of 216. Johnson has been severely roughed up in his last two starts against weak offensive teams: 8 IP, 7 ER vs. the Twins and 3.2 IP, 7 ER vs. the Royals. What will happen when Randy faces a top-ranked lineup? Well, if I know anything about baseball, he'll toss a gem.

According to Extra Bases, Papi believes he's 2-3 weeks from returning to the lineup, so he should be back soon after the All-Star Break.

JD Drew gets the day off today with Johnson on the hill, and with Varitek also out because Wakefield is catching, we've got Coco batting 6th and Cash batting 7th. Yech.

Anyway, here are the full lineups for the rubber match:

Arizona Diamondbacks

1. Eric Byrnes, LF

2. Stephen Drew, SS

3. Orlando Hudson, 2B

4. Conor Jackson, 1B

5. Chad Tracy, DH

6. Mark Reynolds, 3B

7. Chris Young, CF

8. Miguel Montero, C

9. Justin Upton, RF

Randy Johnson, SP

Boston Red Sox

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, LF

2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B

3. Kevin Youkilis, 1B

4. Manny Ramirez, DH

5. Mike Lowell, 3B

6. Coco Crisp, CF

7. Kevin Cash, C

8. Brandon Moss, RF

9. Julio Lugo, SS

Tim Wakefield, SP

Yeesh. This lineup + the Sox' traditional lack of run support for Wakefield = ugh. Good to see Youk hitting 3rd, but if it was at all possible, I'd expect the Sox to score a negative number of runs tonight.

Prove me wrong (again), boys.

Wow, and Johnson's a lefty. That lineup and his lefty-ness = doomsday for the Sox.

Lugo's going to take one to the head pretty soon for that ticky tack step out at the last second stuff.

And now all of a sudden the tying run is on deck. Nothing is simple with this team.

The AARP flamethrower versus the Social Security junkballer. Together they were the oldest pair of pitchers to start a game since Satchel Paige and Bill Monbouquette in 1965.

And the junkballer leads a shutout. Even if Chris Hansen just had to make things a little too interesting in the ninth, before Little Papi came in to swish Chad Tracy to nail it.

"we’ve got Coco batting 6th and Cash batting 7th. Yech."

I thought the exact same thing. Now, after 3-doubles by Coco, 2RBI's by Moss (he's figuring it out!!!), Pedroia and Lugo warming up, and a HR by Cash . . . and Yech becomes Yayyyy! What a strange team. Even without Papi, JD, Tek, this game felt good from the very first inning, and yes, I was glued to my seat from the first pitch. Glad it was a short game.

Confirmed today, by a friend of Wonderful Wake (as in full of wonders) that he was on the verge of being released at low "A" level as a first baseman with a buck-fifty BA, when a pitching coach just happened to see him messing around with knucklers in the OF. 20+ years later he is a legend.

Goin' to Houston. Cowboy Up!

What the heck? The Sox won with me at the ballpark?!?!?!

And Cash hit a 3-run homer? What?!

That snaps a seven-game losing streak with me at the ballpark!

Of course, the A's laid a stinker, 4-0.
