Boston Red Sox (57-43) @ Seattle Mariners (38-60) |
GAME NOTES: Okay, I’m serious. The road woes need to stop with Seattle, a 60-loss team that’s effectively thrown in the towel on their season. I don’t want to hear about the Red Sox record away from Fenway or about yet another sweep last weekend. Championship-caliber teams sweep series against the worst team in baseball, road, home or on the moon. Tonight it starts with Jon Lester back home against lefty Jarrod Washburn. Winning is a good idea.

Well it seems the Yanks have no intention of losing to Blackburn so we better churn a win out so help me God.

Is it respect that’s keeping Varitek out of the 9th spot? Someone tell him Billy Mueller won a batting title in that spot…I’d rather see Lowrie, Crisp, Tek in the 7-8-9 order.

I’ve got the same question about keeping Ellsbury in the leadoff spot. He’s drawn like 4 walks in a month and a half and hasn’t swiped a base in God knows how long. I understand the whole “I don’t want to upset him” thing, but when a guy slumps, you gotta drop him in the order.
I’ll eat that if Jacoby gets a couple of knocks and steals a bag today, but I smell an 0-fer with a looking strikeout mixed in.

The A’s aren’t doing us any favors, so it’d be a good idea to come away with a ‘W’ in this one.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
2 innings, 2 DPs
great
July 21st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Lowell’s 0-for-13 against Washburn lifetime now. Think batting him 5th today wasn’t such a good idea?
July 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
That was *almost* an unbelievable 5-4-3 double play.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Jacoby was about 6 miles behind that 2-0, 87mph fastball…
…yet somehow managed a hit into left off the pitcher.
Anyway you can, I guess…
July 21st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
And even Dustin can’t come up with a clutch knock.
2 double plays, 2 left through 3. We’re wasting baserunners like they grow on trees.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
But…at least he made up for it by saving one in the field.
July 21st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Could ‘Tek be on his way to busting out of his slump?
July 21st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Wait a second…Coco reached AND Varitek homered?
July 21st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Sweet Jesus…
Did anyone else just see that? Tek?!? Home run?!? Guhhhh?!?
July 21st, 2008 at 11:32 pm
not just a home run, but a safeco homerun, guess there’s still a little magic left there
July 21st, 2008 at 11:40 pm
whose the wiseass that voted to retire Lugo’s number =O
July 21st, 2008 at 11:48 pm
I still can’t believe that happened. Even more-so because Coco reached in front of him to make it worth a pair instead of one.
Of course, the Diamondbacks’ Alex Romero — who entered the game with an OPS in the .500s — breaking up Rich Harden’s no-hitter in the 6th inning with his first career homerun was probably even less likely.

UM…did NESN just cut to commercial with two outs in the inning?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:01 am
Yes, they did. I fired off an email to them already, feel free to pile on, they’ve done that a few times this season already.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:24 am
I was waiting for the coffee reference. Here we go. More annoying than YES! to some of us. BTW, nice job getting a hit there coco.

Is Jon Lester officially this staff’s #1 pitcher? I’m just saying…. between this year and last, he’s regainned both his mid-90s stuff and his command. Coming out of his hand the fastball and curve look identical and both have great depth. While he was sick and didn’t have his best stuff he really learned how to pitch and get himself out of jams. He’s the first relevant lefty starter I can think of since I’ve been born. I’ve always liked this guy and I think that 5 years from now he could be the best pitcher of the whole bunch (him, buchhoz, masterson, bowden). To think we almost traded him for madonna-Rod

“He’s the first relevant lefty starter I can think of since I’ve been born.”
I mean on te Red Sox since I’ve been born.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 am
They realize Tek is like lightning right?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 am
I’m breathing a bit easier now. Not quite as worried about a bullpen meltdown with a 4 run lead. Though maybe I should be. More insurance, please :-)
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:36 am
Way to grab that spot Lowrie! 4-run lead may be a great chance to try Masterson with Paps as a safety blanket in the 9th.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 am
Lester’s still under 90 pitches, so maybe … well, I won’t say it.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:40 am
Shit Dan I think we jinxed it.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:40 am
Now I’m pissed at myself for even thinking it.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:46 am
And now an infield hit on a comebacker…hope Lester’s OK.
This has rally written all over it.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:46 am
gameday says injury delay, Is anyone hurt?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:46 am
Yeah. Thanks, guys.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 am
Care to tell what is happening?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 am
Why is this happening? I’m a good person. I don’t kick puppies. I don’t cheat on my taxes or my wife. Why is this happening?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 am
Bob, Lester took a liner off the shin. WRKO says he’s o.k.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 am
THANK YOU PAPELBON!!!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 am
Thank the Lord.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 am
Well, that was easy. I was positive we were either supposed to grab some rye bread or watch Ibanez clear ‘em with a double.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 am
Atta boy Paps.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 am
And Lowrie - Lugo would have found a way to turn that into a five-run error…
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 am
“Grab some rye bread”? Could you translate that for me, please?
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:53 am
When I saw it was double play I jumped and yelled. My dog woke up from her deep sleep on my bed.
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:02 am
Random quesion because I haven’t seen the Mariners this season: Is Ichiro back to playing RF regularly and is Bloomquist the everyday CF?
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 am
TD:
“Grab some rye bread…” is Mariners’ broadcaster Dave Niehaus’s grand slam call. Fortunately (as I’m finding out while listening to the M’s broadcast and wishing I had NESN), Niehaus is on vacation; perhaps that’s what spared us the trouble.
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 am
Um. Thanks, DR.
I’ve never understood Seattleites. First the bad coffee, then the plaid shirts & goatees, now this. A weird bunch they are.
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:14 am
Yet another strong outing by Lester … its amazing how much faith I have in him right now … even more amazing considering where he was not that long ago … let’s hope he’s alright and can keep it up
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 am
Hey comon, Seattle is a pretty cool city, good music, great seafood (still not as good as New England of course) and as a caffeine fiend, I don’t really mind Starbucks or Seattles Best.
July 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 am
Definitely better than that shit-kicker’s-ville Oklahoma City.
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
I usually switch between NESN and the other station, increasingly favoring the other station. NESN squeezes more ads per second than any of them. At the beginning of an inning, NESN often comes in just as the ball is being thrown, and at the end of an inning goes to commercial precisely at the 3rd out. The other stations actually respect their viewers by getting back to the game early, and leaving well after the 3rd out, with appropriate dialogue and often film of what just happened. Seattle and other analyists are fair and full of information about the players (last night praising Lester, Lowrie, Pedroia, Tek, Jacoby, Paps, etc. in some detail) instead of talking about Wally.
And I think we will be hearing less and less about Lowrie’s range, arm accuracy, etc. If given a chance to play the position consistently will force us to retire Julio’s # for sure.
