Buchholz still inspires no confidence in me. I know we're still up ahead but I think Masterson could be a better fit for SP than Buch.
So let's go offense, tack a few more runs on and make this one safe.

But I'll give his 6 Ks some credit...even if it is against the Mariners.

Yeah - maybe Masterson and Buchholz should switch roles, at least for a while.

when was the last time Ellsbury hit a ball with authority? he is just hitting weak grounders and popups.

Ellsbury is also inspiring minimal confidence, and it's nice to see Manny decided to give himself the day off.

O.K.: bases loaded, nobody out. How are we going to manage not to score here?

Well 2 Ks are certainly a way to do it.
Are you serious guys? I mean...really?

But we only score one. How pathetic is that? At least Hernandez is up over 100 pitches.

Jacoby really needs to be sent down, he flat out sucks right now.

Posted by Daniel Rathman, July 23, 2008 6:28 PM
OK, so I wasn't the only one who was just slightly worried that they wouldn't take advantage and plate at least one run there. Good to know.
On a related note, Tito: can you please take Jacoby out of the leadoff spot for the series against the Yankees this weekend?

Seriously...this is disconcerting and I bet you Dustin would've made a little more of an effort had the situation befallen him.

Yeah get your ass back to AAA. You need more work. I can't believe you were on the cover of SI as a big prospect rookie.

Pressure situation for Masterson. Let's see if he can prove something here...

2 Ks. Nice. Good thing Tito shut down Buchholz before something bad happened... oh, wait.

This team couldn't execute a hit-and-run if their lives depended on it.

Posted by Colin, July 23, 2008 6:59 PM
Well it seems like the only one making the conscious offensive effort is Pedroia and also Youkilis with his 2-RBI double.
Masterson still holding his own. WE NEED THOSE RUNS!

Posted by Daniel Rathman, July 23, 2008 6:59 PM
Who knows? Maybe Tito hasn't gotten the message yet. Actually, I think it could work fine if Youk were running and Dustin were at the plate. But even though Youk isn't horribly strikeout prone, he's not exactly a true contact hitter.

Masterson's doing pretty well. Though Lopez's fly to left was a bit too close for comfort.
#33
Posted by Colin, July 23, 2008 7:05 PM
But still the offense decided to take five save for Pedroia.

Wait, did Vidro actually hit a homer? Oh, nevermind, a pig just flew by my window.

Can we get Masterson a 'W'? He definitely deserves it for this effort...
#38
Posted by Daniel Rathman, July 23, 2008 7:19 PM
Should've seen that coming with Tek-Coco-Ellsbury due up. Just don't give up a run in the 9th so our decent hitters actually have a chance...

BTW, I have a disturbing man crush on Brandon Morrow! The guy is so good, there's no way we could get it right?
#41
Posted by Daniel Rathman, July 23, 2008 7:31 PM
Morrow, sadly enough, might be another Bavasi mismanagement casualty. He should be a top-of-the-rotation starter; kind of a waste of talent in the bullpen.
If Delcarmen gives up a run here, this one's on Tito. Can we honestly not trust Oki to get Willie Bloomquist out? I know he walked Cairo on four pitches, but Delcarmen hasn't exactly done his job lately.

I realize that we're in the heat of the moment here, but i dont think that 5.1 and 3 runs is that bad for Buchholz. Another thought, Masterson needs to become the primary set-up man immeidately.

All's well that ends well, I guess.
Now...SCORE!!!

Dammit.
I'm off to the Giants game. Just win ... somehow.

Posted by Bob, July 23, 2008 7:47 PM
Maybe Delcarmen was inspired by Masterson trying to take his job.

Francona: Manny, grab a bat
Manny: No hablos englais

I spat out the water I was drinking when I read that, good one Steven. I'm really glad the entire offense is already back in Boston.

wow Pap is a gold glover. Here's where we lose the game. Someone always scores on Pap if he's on base with no outs. I bet he'll steal, then score on a bloop hit to right.

That's game, unlike the Red Sox, the Mariners actually know how to hit a sac fly.

Roth: You just had to ask didn't you?
Now we got Hansen...
I hope you're happy.
#67
Posted by Tessie's Dad, July 23, 2008 8:38 PM
Hansen will actually let the winning run get to the plate. I feel unwell.
#68
Posted by Colin, July 23, 2008 8:40 PM
Throw a God damned strike! Do you know how to throw a God damned strike Craig Hansen?
#69
Posted by Colin, July 23, 2008 8:41 PM
You got fucking lucky Craig. You're fucking lucky Youk and Dusty are there.

ship his worthless ass to Portland, and get Moss tonight !
#71
Posted by Bob, July 23, 2008 8:50 PM
Craig Hansen must be traded, NOW. I still think he'd dominate the NL (like Romero) let's ship him to the pirates for Marte.
#72
Posted by Tessie's Dad, July 23, 2008 9:01 PM
I think Hansen's trade value takes a big hit every time he toes the rubber. I'd be happy if we could trade him for a bag of Giambi's moustache clippings. We could sprinkle them in Lugo's jockstrap and, well, LOOK OUT!!

Craig Hansen scares me...
No ... let me rephrase that ... Craig Hansen with a baseball in his hand donning a Boston Red Sox uni ... that scares me

Hero of the Game nominees:
1) Justin MASTERson for his nasty relief work.
2) Francona for coming out to chill Papelbon out before he dished out that doubleplay ball with the runner on 3rd.
3) Papelbon for getting through the jam.

Masterson was amazing. I know it's only one appearance, but he was a closer in college and he clearly knows what it takes to be a reliever, he should be this year's Joba for us.

Wow. Sounds like a Yankees 'Boston Sucks' session. Scary moments tonight, but:
1. Without Papi or Manny, and with Ichiro scooping up JD's homer, we won with some clutch hitting. Thank you Mikey, Jacoby, Dustin, etc.
2. Buchholz did not have a bad first inning. In fact he had several good innings. He is getting it.
3. Oki and MDC did their jobs, and Hansen didn't lose.
4. We swept the freaking series, stopped the bleeding, gained on the Rays, and go to Boston in great shape.
5. Masterson is awesome in relief, long or short.
6. On the field in this road sweep were, count 'em, 9 Red Sox rookies and near rookies: Ellsbury, Lowrie, Moss, Pedroia, Buchholz, Masterson, Hansen, Lester, MDC . . . did I miss anyone? Sounds like the Rays? We can predict (perhaps wrongly) that the Rays have such a young team they should fade as the season wanes (like Youk and Mikey? Ha!), yet we are merciless about our own young, who just plain stopped our losing streak with 3 consecutive wins.
7. We come home with confidence, and Papi and Manny back in the lineup, Lowrie hitting .300 and playing like he owns SS, our rotation pitching better than ever, a Pen with Masterson ratcheting up, Colon getting through rehab, Jacoby finding ways to get on and make great plays, Pedroia and Youk on fire, JD still hitting, Mikey an RBI machine.
8. By the end of this road trip, 4-5 Red Sox should have +/-20HR, and 6 or 7 starters at +/-.300BA.
9. If we don't get Marte or whomever, Colon or Buchholz could wind up in the pen for awhile who, with Masterson, should solve the Pen problem for 2008.
In summary. Enjoy it. Rejoice and Halleluia. It all seems to be coming together, finally.

Sorry. #8. I meant "by the end of this home stand". . . . (and by the end of the next road trip, these #'s will be even better.)
