NYY 1, BOS 0: Joba as good as advertised

No walks and nine strikeouts over seven innings of work tallies up for a dominant performance by Joba Chamberlain in the 1-0 win for the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox.

The only run came on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jason Giambi.

Goat of the game?

I do not know if you can say there is a goat of the game here.  Just a tough 1-0 loss.

Next Game: Wakefield vs Pettitte

Should be a good pitching matchup tonight.  Hopefully, the Sox offense can score some runs today.

I understand the decision to not throw away star prospects to acquire Street, Rauch, Marte or Fuentes, etc., because Masterson, Colon, Buchholz, Zinc, Pauley, Hansack will probably do as well or better through October, if needed.

Using the same logic, if the Sox do not pursue the Bays or Nadys to deal with Manny's possible sitting out 2008, then we need to see what Carter, Bailey or Moss can do at Fenway over an extended period. Carter is pure hitter, yesterday hitting his 24thHR, continuing to drive the 1st place Pawsox. Bailey is in the same category. Moss is a Dave Murphy with a better bat, showing good form despite being little used. We may not have to look beyond Pawtucket, but we'd better get a really good look at them at Fenway before making such an important decision.

That was a pretty pathetic showing last night, hopefully Manny will play today and they can rough up Pettite like last time. Papi looked decent last night, let's win one please.

P.S. Props to Joba, he is indeed good and not overrated at all.

But if he throws at Youk again, one the Red Sox pitchers should put a pitch in Jeter's ear (preferrably Lester or Beckett, they have the best fastballs.

On the other hand, perhaps the Sox should just bite the bullet and do the deal for Fuentes and Holliday, forget the drama, and win the WS again. Manny, Holliday and Drew OF and in the lineup through October. Coco as backup. Jacoby and Hansen in AAA until the 9/1 callup. A repentant Manny gets his extension, or an unrepentant Manny walks, and we make do with Jacoby, Holliday, Drew in 2009, preparing for a fourpeat.

Check your facts: Joba gave 1 walk and the Yankee run came on a infield single, not a fielder's choice

Actually, I'm still voting for Foster the HP Umpire as goat of the game.

I used to root for the Pirates. They have great, knowledgable, friendly fans, a beautiful ballpark, and a great history. I'd always hoped that they could overcome the limitations of being a small-market team and win it all.

Until yesterday - now they're just a bunch of f***ing collaborators.

In a related story, today the Yankees announced that they acquired the entire Atlanta Braves pitching staff in exchange for half a waffle Jason Giambi didn't finish at breakfast, a pair of Hideki Matsui's socks and Madonna's telephone number.
