The Angels could be getting a little scarier soon. Brandon Wood is 25 for his last 56 with 10 homeruns in triple-a. Although he is a better fit at 3b I think they need Chone to hit lead off. I could see Wood starting at short stop and having Aybar, who is terrific defensively but allergic to walks at the plate, coming off the bench as a pinch runner/defensive replacement. Wood has some whole's in his swing and will likely always strike out 25% - 30% of the time but he is definitely capable of hitting 30-40 homeruns and putting a better obp then Aybar as well.

Here are today's starting lineups...
Oakland Athletics
1. Ryan Sweeney, RF
2. Mark Ellis, 2B
3. Jack Cust, LF
4. Frank Thomas, DH
5. Carlos Gonzalez, CF
6. Jack Hannahan, 3B
7. Bobby Crosby, SS
8. Daric Barton, 1B
9. Rob Bowen C
Dallas Braden, SP
Boston Red Sox
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Jason Bay, LF
6. Jed Lowrie, SS
7. Jason Varitek, C
8. Coco Crisp, CF
9. Jacoby Ellsbury, RF
Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP
Drew gets the day off. Lowell's in the lineup today, but probably will not play tomorrow. No arms in the outfield today...

Lowrie batting 6th? yikes. I don't think that Wood is good enough defensively to play short and until now he'd been having a brutal year, doesn't scare me that much. Besides the Angels aren't the Red Sox, they don't really care how much a player walks, they'll stick with Aybar.

Couple of quick ones for the Halos in New York. 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 1st.

Yeah but Aybar completely sucks with the bat. He barely has a .700 ops, Wood could play the first 6 and then you would get gold glove caliber defense for the last three innings from Aybar. Wood would likely struggle but he would probably slug .500 now, albeit with plenty of k's. Something has apparently clicked and he has been on fire for some time and has is op up to .922. Either way, they could manage to get him some at bats and him hitting 7th or 8th in that line-up would be a boon over Aybar.
Lou Merloni is exceptional as an analyst already. I could see him taking over Remy down the road if Lou does not move on to bigger things. Its good to have a guy who understands baseball philosophies and can speak so fluidly.

Bay's got a clutch triple, a homer, and an outfield assist in 2-plus games.

Dustin has definitely become my favorite player possibly ever. He's definitely the most reliable hitter in the lineup never does anything to kill you.

Who's going to Futures @ Fenway? Finally got around to getting my tickets, can't wait.
Not to ruin the strategy, but the monster goes unguarded for much of the 2nd game. We watched about 4 innings of the 2nd game last season from up there, and it was practically deserted. Futures is one of the very best things about this ownership group.

If Jack Cust is a 3 true outcomes hitter. Is Dice-K a 2 true outcomes pitcher? He doesn't seem to give up a ton of hits, but it's always a K or a BB with him. It's ridiculous.

43 pitches through two innings?? Aren't the Japanese supposed to value efficiency?

I'm thinking about going, but I'm sure I could just walk up and buy tickets, so I'm gonna hold off on deciding. Pretty sure I'm going, though. Never been on the monster, so thanks for the strategy, Sean.

I mean, the 90 minute tour of Fenway costs like $9. You can buy a ticket for $5 that lets you essentially wander around the entire park for like 7 hours. How this doesn't sell out early every year I'll never understand.
Plus, concessions are discounted, so that's sweet.

Boy, sure is raining here. It is surreal to hear DO comment on lighting I can see from my apartment. Living within the T beltway is awesome.
The rain and lightning hit us first, so when it stops here shouldn't be too much longer. It's sunny and pouring right now.

Tex just hit a grand slam to give the Angels the lead back. Scary good.

God I hate the Angels, 3 errors in an inning to give the Yankees a win? Why couldn't they do that against us?

Can anyone tell me why Mike Lowell is on this team, exactly?

glad to see the sweep. what did Bay do today?
Manuel is having a monster day with 4 hits, including HR and 3 rbi's. I hate it that he's gone but I'm glad we are finally back on track.

What I hate is that if Manny starts hitting everyone is gonna say we shouldn't have traded him ... Do you all seriously think he was gonna play hard and preform like that in Boston anymore? It's a different situation ... If he likes it there let him play hard and mash ... He wasn't gonna do it here

Manny "not trying" in July netted him a .347 .473 .587 1.060 line. He will tear it up for the Dodgers, but it's because the NL West is a joke that doesn't deserve a playoff representative.

Okay to me it's not his stat line ... it's his attitude ... I know you could care less about that ... and I know he would've hit ... he always does ... but if he plays like he doesn't care ... how is that good for a team that needs to care alot if they are gonna turn it around? I dunno ... both sides have a point ... it's gonna be a never ending debate
Unless one of the two teams wins the World Series ... then the debate will be over of course lol
