GAME NOTES: More than a few story lines to watch in tonight's game...
Will Clay Buchholz pitch well enough to give himself a chance at locking down the #5 spot in the rotation? If he lays another egg, do the Red Sox have to consider other options?
Mike Lowell gets the night off (potentially a sight we might need to get used to given his gimpy hip). In his stead, Youk moves over to third and Sean Casey mans first. With Lowell out of the clean up spot, there's a shake up in the lineup (see comments) with Youk moving to the four spot and J.D. Drew manning the leadoff helm. If Mikey's out for an extended period of time, are we covered?
Can this team figure out the formula for a road win?

I'm surprised Alex Gordon has not had a better year. Billy Butler looks like he is about to break out though. Either way, hopefully Clay avoids the huge inning/s and we gain a 1/2 game on idle TB. It would be nice to be able to rest MDC and Okajima for a couple games considering how much work they are looking at down the stretch.

I think they may have rushed Gordon, although I still think he will be great, too much there to get nothing. in any case, they'll have another good one pretty soon in Moustakas

Yeah, Moustakas has finally started to hit a little bit after a rough start and the mid-west league is notoriously tough on hitters. Either way its too bad the Royals did not pony up and take Wieters who was the consensus #2 behind Price...He put up a 1024 ops in A ball this year and has put up a .981 in double-a through 100 at bats...but such is the major league draft, signability and all that shit.

Yeah Wieters is a hell of a player (wish we had him with our catching woes), but Moustakas will be an awesome offensive asset especially if he sticks in the middle infield. He's got a .780 ops with 18 homers at age 19 in a notorious pitchers league. That's pretty good for a shortstop. If he keeps progressing the Royals could have an infield including him, Gordon, and Butler in a couple of years

I think Butler is a DH, he's been pretty bad everyewhere they have tried to hide him. They will hopefully have Hosmer as a first baseman if they can get him signed by 8/15, he could move quickly for a high school kid. Hopefully Moustakas can stick at ss for them, regardless when you have a bat like Wieters at the catcher position that is something you should not pass up. Either way I hope KC finds a window where these kids all are contributing and get competitive for a while.

Ok that does it. I have hereby lost my patience and tolerance with Clay Buchholz.
You can claim his stats are improving all you want, but an 0-5 and potentially 0-6 run since AAA is not convincing me of anything. Clay sucks. I'll say it as that...he sucks. The second I read the Herald and saw that he was pitching I knew the odds of losing were greater in our favor.

He can't avoid the big inning. Not sure how much of that stems from pitching from the stretch. Either way it is always a good inning for Clay or a horrendous one...the runs are never scattered. May be time to give David Pauley or Zink a start if Colon is not ready. Pauley pitched tonight, 7 ip 4 h 2r and has a 3.3 era...he would be in line to pitch again in 5 days.

Cmon Clay ... his pitch count is alright ... he's given up some damage but he can keep us in the game with 2-3 more strong innings ... I'm not giving up on him yet as our #5 ... My hopes were too high to give em up yet

This one is entirely on the offense. You can score 2 runs in the 1st but you can't score again against KC? Bullshit, complete bullshit. Clay also needs to learn some control, I want to see him succeed, but at this point might as well bring up Zink and give him a shot. Clay has absolutely no guts with runners on.

Clay should take a lesson from Masterson and Lester and grow some balls. It's pretty clear to me that this is a talented kid who had initial success and bought into his own hype.

btw, Joba has a shoulder issue. Right now they are saying it is a tired shoulder but who knows at this point since the game just ended.

I make it a rule not to root for a player to get injured, but considering that Joba has actually tried to murder Youk 3 times, I'll make an exception. I hope his career unfolds something like Mark Prior's.
