BOS 7, BAL 4: Young guns charge up Sox
Jeff Bailey notched a solo-homer in the second, Dustin Pedroia collected two hits and two RBI's, and Jed Lowrie walked three times and drove home two in Boston's 7-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Paul Bryd earned the win over 7 innings of work, on four runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.  Byrd gave up seven hits and three home runs in the decision.
Jonathan Papelbon tallied his 35th save of the season in the ninth inning despite putting the tying run at the plate.
Stars of the Game: Youngin's
It just seems no matter who we call up at this point they pay dividends when they get in the lineup.
Next Game: Lester rebounds
Against a team like the Orioles I expect Lester to go at least 7 innings and grab the W.

Baltimore has a .792 OPSA vs. lefties, and a .775 vs righties. Not a major change, but something to consider. We, meanwhile, hit .842 vs. lefties (a welcome change), and .797 against righties.

Speaking of lefties, Cliff Lee is 20-2 now. I called that. Honestly. What?
Pretty remarkable when you consider Cleveland's offense and how much of a regression their pen has had (other then Borowski they were pretty damn good last year)...As great as he has been you figured he would have some Wakefield like luck along the way given those factors.

Not just that, but Lee is NOT doing it with smoke and mirrors. He absolutely dominated tonight. I hope he keeps it up next year.

Lester has a history of success against Baltimore so I expect him to be good although I wouldn't call it rebounding. He was great in his last start he just threw too many pitches early and then one bad pitch by Oki ruined everything.

Good point Bob. That couldashoulda been a win for him. And Daisuke was absolutely dominant last time, so perhaps, finally, a sweep?
And with Beckett, maybe Lowell and Aardsma back Friday, and Colon finishing his rehab Saturday in AAA playoff game 4, the stars could be lining up for the stretch.
It sure is worth an article here that Sox AAA, AA, A teams are all in the playoffs, and all affiliates had a winning season. In terms of player development, this should impact the Sox positively for a decade. MVN's timing is perfect.

In terms of Young Guns, I just read that Joe Thurston was named the 2008 PawSox MVP. Might he replace AC and Julio next year??? Good IF and OF glove, speed, .300 hitter with power. Could be quite an upgrade.

By the way, has anyone seen this yet?

Its not confirmed yet, but apparently the Red Sox are pursuing Japanese amateur talent now. Could be risky since its not going to make the Japanese Leagues happy, but at the same time it seems like a typical ahead-of-the-curve move by Theo and company.

After Joe Thurston's great year, that surprised me too, but Joe got through waivers.

I was always wondering why teams weren't going after young Japanese players ... similar to the way we have been going into Latin America recruiting teenage talent for quite awhile now ... plus it only makes sense considering how much it costs to get guys like Dice-K and Darvish ... We should definently be looking to tap that talent earlier ... It seems like a no-brainer to me ... Good job Theo
