Rockies get one-hit, lose to Mets
A single by Brad Hawpe in the fourth inning and four walks accounted for all of the Rockies’ “offense” this afternoon. Once again, poor run support masked a good start by Ubaldo Jimenez. Ubaldo’s 4-9 record belies the fact that he’s actually been a good pitcher this season, and today was no different. He wasn’t excellent by any stretch of the word, but on most afternoons, giving up three runs over six innings and striking out eight batters will give your team a shot at winning. But that doesn’t work when your teammates are having such a lousy day at the plate as the Rockies were.
How good has Ubaldo been lately? Since June 1, he’s got a 2.98 ERA over nine starts… yet he’s only 3-4 in those starts. On the season, Ubaldo has only gotten an average of 3.15 runs to work with. It doesn’t really matter how well you’re pitching — you’re not going to win a whole lot when you’re only scoring three runs a game. On the other hand, Aaron Cook has gotten an average of 4.65 runs of support, a large reason why he’s 11-6. Not that Cook hasn’t been good, but for Aaron, who used to be the king of poor run support, the Rockies score runs. For Ubaldo, they get one hit. One freaking hit.
There’s just not that much to write about tonight. Every team has bad games, but unfortunately for the Rockies, it seems like there have been far too many of those in 2008.
