Huber Traded To Padres

The Royals just announced that 1B/OF Justin Huber has been traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for a player to be named later.

Since Huber was out of options it’s not surprising, but it’s still a disappointment. The Padres are struggling for outfield depth, so I’m sure he’ll get a chance for some playing time - something he never had in Kansas City.

What a shame! I guess I am a Padres fan now. Good luck to you Justin! I know you will make a name for yourself.

So does anyone know the list of players that the Padres have pooled together for the Royals to choose from?

And I meant Padres fan AS WELL now…

Well at least he’ll get some playing time. I think Huber was basically an Emil Brown (his first year) type player. Moderate power and a liability in the field and on the bases. That kind of player just isn’t satisfactory for the Royals anymore. We need complete players like David DeJesus who at the very least won’t hurt you. Anything less is below average.

Yeah, I am sorry to see him go, but being in CA, I hope to see him play. I too am interested in who we are choosing from for him. I guess I am confused by the PTBNL process. Could we not get a known player? If we settled on a deal with the Padres, then what is keeping us from naming them? is it by Huber’s performance in some way? Or is there a pool that we couldnt decide on but we needed to make room on the 40-man by a certain deadline?

I’ve never understood the PTBNL process, either, so I’d also appreciate some bringing some light to the situation.

From what I understand, and correct me if I’m wrong, the two teams agree to a trade. In this case, the Padres agreed to take Huber off of the Royals hands. In return, the Padres offered a list of players that the Royals can choose from. I don’t know how long or short the list has to be but typically it’s up to eight players. I also don’t know if there’s a time table instated for the Royals to have to take the player that they want. Essentially the Royals agree to the PTBNL trade allowing the potential player to start the season playing for the Padres organization and either improoving or regressing, making the decision easier, based on performance results during the season.

GDubWing, as far as I know everything you said is correct. I’d just like to add (mostly for clarification) is that the reason the Royals are given time to choose is so they can scout each guy. I think you hinted at that, but I wanted to clarify.

I’m sad to see Huber go, but I think now he’s in a place where he’ll get a shot, and quite honestly the Royals don’t have the roster spot to give him that shot. I heard Edmonds is hurt, so that might be where Huber fits in right now in SD.

Since he’s such a poor fileder, Huber would have been better served to have been traded to an AL team where he could DH some. The funny thing is that he all offense and no glove and yet his offense isn’t likely to be good enough to play a full-time DH sport, at least not a very good team.

I don’t mind seeing him go since he couldn’t field and the Royals never gave him a shot. If we would have let him play last year or before, he might have had some decent trade value.

On the PTBNL, I wonder if Huber’s performance impacts who we get to choose from. I think what you guys are saying is probably correct, but I wonder who give us some first hand insight into the PTBNL process.

I was surprised he wasn’t traded to an AL team. I don’t know the Pads outfield situation but they are set a 1B with Gonzalez and Clark.

PTBNL situation is a setting where each team scouts the value of the trade, and a list is provided for the reimbursed team, BUT depending upon the traded player’s performance, the list can be adjusted or amended at a later date, requisite before the trade deadline…

so, can we now trade german and add shealy for gawd’s sake?!

Why is everyone down on Shealy? He’s young, can field and has a good bat. He has no errors on first last year in 52 games. He had as many homers this Spring Training as Butler, but had far fewer at bats. He had a better batting average than Guillen, Grudz, Teahen and Gload in Spring Training.

Spring Training is just that, but that is the only way to decent on who is on the team. Shealy deserves to be on the team more than Gload right now.

Either way, he has one more option…it’s time to start thinking about where he fits in the future, so he doesn’t end up like Huber.

I would trade Gload over Shealy right now. Give Shealy a chance. If he doesn’t succeed, Butler needs to be pushed harder to play first.

Then again, Butler NEEDS to play first anyways.

I’m also of the belief that we need to trade German and I still think he might net a DECENT prospect in return. It may be at A-Ball or AA-Ball level but a prospect nonetheless. I know many people don’t necessarily love Jason Smith but he is on a Minor League deal so we do have some insurance between him and Aviles/Sanchez in case Grudz, Pena, or Callapso gets hurt.

I wanted Huber to succeed as a Royal. After all, I am a transplanted American living in Australia and the Royals have been my favorite sports team ever since their inception. I thought it was a natural fit for me. I will still cheer him on and hope he does well for the Pads but it would have BETTER if it had been the Royals. Buddy Bell should be ashamed for the way he MIShandled this guy the last two years. WHY bring him up and then have him SIT??? Still, I don’t think that Justin will ever be an All-Star or anything like that anyway.

Lastly, I do believe Shealy should make this team. It sure looks like the Royals took the “easy” way out by sending down all the guys that still had options left doesn’t it? I guess that’s alright so long as they are later willing to call them up in case of injury or poor performance by the guys they kept.

OK, this is lastly (unlike the last paragraph), I still hold out hope for Kyle Davies. I trust that GMDM knew what he was getting when he traded Dotel for him. I know he has been erratic and mostly ineffective but perhaps he will find something that “clicks” in Omaha. I hope so. Along with that does anyone think that DeLaRosa might re-sign with the Royals to a minor league deal if he makes it through waivers? If not, do you think he MIGHT still find someone to trade SOMETHING for him given his left-handedness and “electric stuff”?

    Go Royals!!! C-ya, AusSteveW

He is a 26 year old left hand pitcher with some major league experience…I don’t think he will clear waivers.

Finally, the Royals have done something that might help Huber have a career. Their mismanagement of him has been an organizational embarrassment.

Do the Royals seriously believe Tomko is any better than DLR?? Or Davies??

First base is just a disaster. The only reason to play Butler at first is to get him hurt. He simply cannot do it. Let’s quit pretending and just accept him for what he is. We can fool around for a few years thinking we can make this guy an acceptable defender and lose sight of what he really is (e.g. a stud camel with the bat). Thank god we don’t have him blocked or we could end up like the Mariners with Edgar Martinez and losing years of great hitting because we insisted on a young stud hitter learning to play defense.

I guess the Shealy supporters have as much right to dream as anyone else. The guy has zero bat speed.

So your excuse for not putting Butler at first is: you do not want him to get injured? That’s insane. Here are two good reasons for Butler to play some kind of defense, left or first.
    1) When the time comes…and it probably will come…that Butler is to the point of being good enough to make more than the Royals can afford, a left fielder or first baseman is going to bring a better trade.
    2) DH needs to be reserved the the older player who stinks defensively or can’t play defense anymore, not a 22 year old. Thus, they can bring in someone like Barry Bonds or Sammy Sosa when they get closer to competing. NOTE: I am NOT suggesting they sign either of these two guys, they would hurt the team more than help the team.

Injuries are a part of Baseball. What if Gordon gets hit in the nose with another ball this season and Guillen breaks his leg? Are you not going to play them because of this?

I’ve come to the point that I think Ross Gload needs to be the next traded. German is still useful. Gload being traded for a decent, but not great prospect would be more useful. Then Ryan Shealy could man first.
