Santana Speculation: Gomez Pulled From Winter Ball?

Is Johan Santana going to become a Met after all? Impact Sports (Santo Domingo) reported Monday that the Mets have pulled Carlos Gomez—the outfield prospect the Twins would love in a package for Santana if the Mets are to make the deal—out of the forthcoming Carribbean Series, in which he would have played for the Licey Tigers, and the speculation is that the Mets don’t want him hurt if indeed the Santana deal might be on.

The Mets have been thought preparing a package of Gomez, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, Deolis Garcia, and Fernando Martinez, a heavy mortgage of prospects for Santana but one that might catapult the Mets back to near-favourite status in the National League East picture, assuming they’re ready to sign Santana long term.

But bear in mind the topsy-turviness around the prospective Erik Bedard to Seattle deal, with the deal said now to be in limbo or dead, it was reported over the weekend that the Mariners called Adam Jones (one of four players the M’s were thought to be sending for the Baltimore lefthander) out of winter ball, likewise, and back to the States for a physical tied to any deal. Then the Orioles come Monday said the deal was on hold at minimum.

The plots thicken . . . we think . . .

MEANWHILE, BACK IN THE STATES . . .

FELIZ PHILLIES—Already the Phillies look better at third base for 2008: they’ve signed Pedro Feliz to two years at $8.5 million.

IF NOMINATED, WILL HE RUN?—Nolan Ryan isn’t saying yet whether he’ll jump if the Texas Rangers offer him the team presidency. The Hall of Famer met with owner Tom Hicks last week and the subject arose, considering Ryan’s in the final year of a five-year deal as a special assistant to Houston’s general manager.

Ryan finished his pitching career with the Rangers after playing with the Astros, the California Angels, and the New York Mets. Ryan also has ownership in a pair of Astros minor league clubs.

Clearly, this is what happens when a team over plays it’s hand when trying to get the best deal for a player. I wonder if they should have taken the Hughes/Cabrera package earlier. Either way, this Mets deal seems to have too many lower tier prospects…I do like Gomez and Martinez though.

Michael—From watching the whole semi-soap opera that’s been the Santana watch, it looks like you’re right. Frankly, I’m stunned that the Twins wouldn’t have loosened up on the cheap strings enough to make this guy a Twin for life. How often does this kind of pitcher roll around that Polehead and Company think they can afford to let him go? (And did they really think even Santana could seduce the Red Sox into parting with Ellsbury?) If the Met deal goes, the Mets may yet look like the club who outsmarted the none-too-smart Twins, even if I, like you, think well of Carlos Gomez and young Martinez.—Jeff

A bit of a conflict here, Marty Noble, the 30 year Newsday Mets beat write, now working for mets.com says the Mets are “opposed to dealing Martinez”.

We’ll see where this falls out.

As a lifelong mets fans with years of disapppointment behind me, i can’t see the Mets getting Santana especially at this price. I still see someone else, Philly, Dodgers, Angels coming out of the blue to swipe in and steal Johan.

After all, it was the Mets who traded their franchise hall of Fame starter for 4 middling prospects in ‘77, not vice versa.

Eric—As a Met fan since the day they were born, I feel your pain. I hadn’t seen Noble’s offering when I caught wind of the Gomez move, though I suspect the Mets might be easier to pry Martinez out of in a Santana deal than either Jacoby Ellsbury or Jon Lester would be from the Red Sox. (Though I think that if it comes down to it, the Red Sox would probably let Lester go first . . . as of now, anyway.)

But I wouldn’t exactly sneeze at the idea of the Dodgers at least laying in wait. They may have more prospects to play with in a Santana deal than either the Phillies or the Angels right now, assuming they, too, don’t suddenly declare a crop of untouchables.

4 Years, 20 Million dollars a year is what the Twins offered Santana, and he flipped them the bird. Think about that number for a second. Okay, who can afford that? I guess the Met’s?

Holy crap, one guy thinks he’s worth that much? The Twins would be wise to trade him for the best offer, but they don’t really need to. They have him this year, and can wait it out. Seriously, he has to pitch somewhere this year and why not Minney. If the Twins are in the hunt, he might consider signing that deal, if they are not, the Twins could trade him for someone who really wants him later. Wosre case, he walks at the end of the year, the twins save $80 million bucks, and get 2 first round picks in the draft next year.

Gomez/Humber/Mulvey/Guerra for Santana is done, pending a contract extension between the Mets and Santana.

I, for one, am ecstatic that the Mets held onto Fernando Martinez, and didn’t completely drain their farm.

They have been making silent moves in their scouting, particularly in Australia, for pitching. They signed two arms in Adam O’Neill, and the lefty Lachlan Hodge. Both are too far away to really tell where they will be in a couple of years, but as of late, the Mets scouting has been very much so, on-point. The pulling of Gomez from the Dominican World Series, and now this, could only have led up to the Santana trade.
