  •  The Yankees have all but withdrawn their efforts for Johan Santana, and have moved on to Dan Haren. Financially, he is the best deal to make.
  • Boston, however, has exchanged medical records for Jon Lester and Johan Santana with Minnesota, and word is they are close to a deal.
  • The Mets have moved into Round 2 of signing Hiroki Kurado, a pitcher who has at least 8-10 teams with legitimate interest.
  • Jason Bay’s buzz has died in Nashville, a deal with the Tribe fell through because the Pirates wanted Adam Miller, but were only offered Cliff Lee.
  • According to their GM, Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones are too expensive for the team, they are now focused on Mike Cameron and a few trade options, too.
  • You have to appreciate the aggresiveness this offseason of the smaller market teams, namely Tampa Bay and Kansas City. The Royals are getting close to signing Jose Guillen to a three year deal worth $33 million, with an assist from Andruw Jones.
  • San Diego is looking for a second baseman, but only as a stopgap, until their young prospect Mat Antonelli is ready.
  • Ed Wade says of his Houston Astros, “We’re not the ‘27 Yankees.” and gives indications he is far from done making moves this offseason.
  • Ken Rosenthal confirms a rumor we posted yesterday, the Phillies are interested in starting pitcher Kris Benson, and of course, Anna Benson.
  • Pat Gillick is starting to wonder where he’ll find the pitching the Phils desperately need.
  • Scott Rolen’s entire medical records are being reviewed by the Milwaukee organization, a sign they are close to obtaining the gold glove third baseman.
  • Milwaukee is also close to signing David Riske, and then will look for more bullpen help in the form of Eric Gagne or Octavio Dotel.
  • The Cubs are the front-runners in for Kosuke Fukudome, who is likely to command a $40-$50 million dollar deal given the market for outfielders this offseason. There is also word within this article of a Mark Prior to San Diego trade, and rumors of Ryan Dempster to Toronto
  • There is also word out of Chicago that a trade of Joe Crede is all but a given.
