Sox, Santana getting closer
UPDATE: The Boston Globe is reporting talks about a contract extension may take place in a meeting later today. Once that meeting concludes, we will know a lot more about how close this deal really is!
ESPN’s Peter Gammons checked in with this latest tidbit:
The Twins and Red Sox are supposed to meet this afternoon to continue discussions on the Johan Santana deal. Sources indicate the Twins are still trying to decide between a 3-for-1 for center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, infielder Jed Lowrie, pitching prospect Justin Masterson and the 4-for-1 swap that substitutes lefty starter Jon Lester and center fielder Coco Crisp for Ellsbury.
SI’s Jon Heyman is also saying:
The Red Sox will enhance their offer for Johan Santana on Tuesday afternoon in order to get a deal done. Perhaps that means one more prospect will go the other way. First baseman Lars Anderson, right-hander Michael Bowden and outfielder Ryan Kalish would have to be at the top of Minnesota’s list if it’s going to be a 5-for-1 deal. They’re not expected to give the Twins both Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury.
