Injury Rundown
Here’s a rundown of the injured players in this years’ spring training:
Eric Chavez: The Oakland Athletics third-baseman participated in the team’s minor league intrasquad game on Tuesday. He did not run the bases however, as his lower back is still very sore. He’s hoping to DH for the club when they head to Japan, but that seems very unlikely.
Yovani Gallardo: The talented starting-pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers has been out since February 17th because of knee problems which lead to surgery, but has progressed quite well. He is looking at beginning the season on the DL, but coming back in perhaps a week or two.
Andy LaRoche: Just as the Dodgers had high hopes that LaRoche would start as the third-baseman, he tore an ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. The Dodgers are now looking for a backup third-baseman for Nomar Garciaparra, as Andy won’t be ready for 8-10 weeks.
Omar Vizquel: Mr. Vizquel will have a surgery on his sore left week sometime this week, and is set to miss 4-5 weeks. The Giants have come out and said that there is a chance he will be ready for opening day, but look for Kevin Fradsen to be the starting short-stop.
Moises Alou: The 41-year old Alou has a hernia, and will now have to miss anywhere from 4-6 weeks. He has a history with injuries, so expect the injury to keep him out for at least 6 and probably 7.
Jim Edmonds: Edmonds must miss 2-3 weeks with a strained calf, and thats definitely an optimistic statement. Expect Jim to miss at least a week of the season, maybe even more if the calf acts up on him. Scott Hairston will likely be the starting center-fielder for the Padres.
Alex Gonzalez: As of Feb. 26, Gonzalez has been diagnosed with a compression fracture in his left knee. He is set to be looked at again in a week or so, but don’t expect Alex to be ready by opening day. Most likely scenario is that the short-stop will miss the first month or so of the 2008 campaign.
