A’s, Street Talking About Extension
A’s closer Huston Street was supposedly the next player to go in Billy Beane’s massive rebuilding project. However, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, the two sides are talking about a multi-year deal.
They know this because Street’s agent, Alan Hendricks, talked to Beane this week. Also, they talked for a lot of the offseason.
Street is arbitration eligible for the next two years, and is then a free agent. The A’s would like to lock him up to ensure that there are no contract issues for a long time with him.
At twenty-four, Street has established himself as a premier MLB closer. He has great stuff, good control, and always has a solid WHIP. The problem with him is that he’s coming off some elbow trouble, and the team might want to see how it holds up this season.
Eventually, I think he’ll get traded. The talks are very preliminary now, and it can be difficult for teams and agents to work out a deal for young closers. The interest for Street will be pretty high near the trade deadline, and with such a demand for relief pitching out there even now, some team will give up a lot.
