Upton, Diamondbacks Not Talking
Yesterday, the Rays signed Evan Longoria to an unprecedented extension, as he’s done very little in the MLB, only being called up last week. They gave him a six-year, $17.5 million deal, buying out all his arbitration years and some free agency.
Diamondbacks outfielder, Justin Upton, may deserve the same one. However, according to the Arizona Republic, Upton says that he hasn’t been offered anything, but he’s ok with that.
At twenty years old, Upton is probably the most talented youngster in the game playing in the big leagues, with a combination of speed, power, and athleticism. Many compare him to the likes of Ken Griffey Jr., as he started playing at a young age as well.
Still, there really is no reason to sign an extension now. He’s not a free agent until 2013, and while he’s been absolutely unbelievable so far, it’s a fairly small sample size. He should continue hitting well, and eventually in year or two, will get a new contract.
Just because Longoria got the contract doesn’t mean that all teams have to lock up their young studs early. The Diamondbacks are fine with waiting, with a lot of time to get something done.
