Cubs Interested In Edmonds?
The Chicago Tribune has a source telling them that the Cubs are exploring the possibility of signing outfielder Jim Edmonds.
Edmonds was released by the Padres last week after struggling mightily, hitting just .178 with only one homer. The superb defense he was known for in St. Louis also appeared to be gone.
However, Cubs manager Lou Piniella has made it no secret that he wants to sign a left-handed batter to go with Kosuke Fukudome. Felix Pie has been struggling, and might need to go down to AAA to get it going. Reed Johnson has been a pleasant surprise so far, but he might not be an everyday player and is a righty.
Edmonds is thirty-seven and might be an injury away from being done. However, this wouuldn’t be that bad of a signing. It would buy the Cubs some time with Pie and possibly create a cetnerfield platoon with Edmonds and Johnson.
We’ll see what happens. You’ve got to think that the Cubs will get some outfielder, whether it’s Edmonds or somebody else.
