Kennedy back in rotation
Well, that didn’t last long, in two ways. The New York Post reports that Ian Kennedy will be called up to start on Thursday in place of Kei Igawa, who’ll likely be sent back down to AAA.
Kennedy was demoted to AAA a week and a half ago after struggling in his starts, having a 8.37 ERA. His control was bad and his WHIP was horrendous. He looked good in his first minor league start, but that was just one. The Yankees hope that the outing regained the youngster’s confidence, which he can translate into MLB success.
Igawa pitched well in AAA, warranting a call-up. However, he was very bad Friday against the Tigers, giving up six runs in three innings. He was just hit hard by almost everyone, and showed little improvement. I thought that he should have gotten a couple more starts, but their patients appears to be running out on him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s put on the block.
The Yankees expected a lot out of Kennedy, possibly contributing to his early-season failures. He should do a little better, but I don’t think he deserves be in that rotation quite yet, needing some more time in the minors for development. Brian Cashman may be doing it because he refused to trade Kennedy to the Twins for Johan Santana in a package, possibly putting his job on the line.
