No surgery for Ortiz?
The Boston Herald reports that Dr. Thomas Graham examined David Ortiz, who is currently on the DL with a partially torn ECU in his left wrist. Graham said there was a “high percentage chance” of Ortiz avoiding surgery while also coming back and play well.
Obviously this doesn’t mean that the option of surgery for Ortiz is gone. Things can change medically and doctors do have opinions and outlooks that can differ. Still, this does seem to be pretty promising for the Red Sox. They will do whatever they can to get him back this season, so at this point, I would be completely shocked if he were to go under the knife.
Right now it’s looking like Ortiz will come back in about a month, possibly a little longer. Even though Boston can get by without him, a healthy Big Papi improves their lineup substantially. If he isn’t healthy and playing at a high level then they would be missing a key part of their team. Manny Ramirez will not be able to do it alone in crunch time with teams pitching around him to get to weaker spots of the lineup.
